In 1968, at the Mexico City Olympics, Tanzanian marathoner John Stephen Akhwari entered the stadium over an hour after the winner had crossed the finish line. His leg was bandaged and bleeding, having been injured in a fall during the race. Most spectators had already left. When asked why he continued running despite having no hope of winning a medal, Akhwari gave an answer that has echoed through sporting history ever since: “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race. They sent me 5,000 miles to finish it.” He finished, not for the crowd that remained, but for those who had sent him — and for the race itself, which demanded to be completed, not merely attempted.
Beloved, the writer of Hebrews closes chapter 11 with an extended roll call of faith’s heroes — Abraham, Moses, Rahab, and countless unnamed others who “were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection” (11:35). Then, with the word “therefore,” the writer transitions from history to exhortation: “since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.”

*The Witnesses: Testimony, Not Spectators*
The Greek word for “witnesses” here — martyrs — is the root of our word *_“martyr.”_* These are not merely spectators watching from heaven’s grandstands; they are testimonies, evidence, proof that the race can be finished. Every hero of Hebrews 11 stands as living proof that faith’s endurance is possible. Their finished races testify that yours can be finished too.

*The Preparation: Stripping for the Run*
Before running, the writer instructs: “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us” (v.1). Notice the distinction between “weight” and “sin” — not every hindrance is sinful. Some things are simply heavy — good pursuits, legitimate relationships, permissible activities — that nonetheless slow the runner down. Ancient runners competed unclothed precisely to eliminate any drag. Beloved, ask honestly: what weight, though not inherently sinful, is slowing your spiritual pace?

*The Focus: Fixed Eyes, Not Wandering Glances*
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (v.2) — the Greek word aphorao means to look away from other things in order to fix the gaze exclusively on one object. Peter sank the moment he glanced at the wind and waves instead of Christ. Every long-distance runner knows the danger of glancing sideways at competitors — it breaks rhythm and drains energy. Endurance requires unwavering focus.

*The Discipline: Trained, Not Merely Willing*
Paul reinforces this with an athletic metaphor from the Isthmian Games: “everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things” (1 Corinthians 9:25). Willingness alone does not complete a marathon — training does. “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (v.27). Even Paul, after decades of ministry, treated disqualification as a genuine possibility requiring ongoing discipline.
Beloved, your race is not yet finished. The cloud of witnesses testifies it can be. Lay aside the weight. Fix your eyes. Discipline your pace. And run — not to start well, but to finish well.
