In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, a young American attorney named James Donovan stood alone in a hostile courtroom to defend Rudolf Abel — a Soviet spy accused of espionage against the United States. The case was politically explosive. Public opinion was overwhelmingly against Abel. Donovan’s own colleagues distanced themselves from the assignment. Yet Donovan argued with extraordinary conviction, not because Abel was innocent, but because every accused soul — regardless of guilt — deserved a skilled and committed advocate. Against all odds, he secured a life sentence rather than execution, and later negotiated Abel’s exchange for captured American pilot Francis Gary Powers. Donovan’s advocacy literally saved a man’s life. His willingness to stand in the gap, at personal cost and public unpopularity, changed everything for his client.

 

Beloved, that courtroom drama is a faint but faithful shadow of what the Ascended Christ does for you — right now, at this very moment — at the Father’s right hand. You have an Advocate. You have an Intercessor. You have a High Priest who *_“always lives”_* — not occasionally, not reluctantly, not conditionally — but always, eternally, and passionately lives to make intercession for you.

*_The Ascension Is Not Abandonment — It Is Advancement._*

 

When Jesus was taken up from Bethany into heaven, the disciples could have interpreted His departure as a form of desertion. Instead, Luke records the most unexpected of responses: *_“they worshipped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy”_* (Luke 24:52, NKJV). How do you respond with great joy to the departure of the One you love? Because they understood what the Ascension meant — Jesus had not left them; He had gone ahead of them. He ascended not to escape the world but to govern it. Not to abandon His people but to prepare a place for them, to send the Holy Spirit upon them, and to stand as their eternal Advocate before the Father.

 

The Ascension is the guarantee that resurrection power has been permanently installed at the highest level of the universe. Every prayer you pray rises to a throne occupied by One who knows your name, bears your wounds in His glorified body, and pleads your cause with the full authority of His completed sacrifice.

*Saved to the Uttermost: The Reach of His Intercession.*

 

The writer of Hebrews employs one of the most sweeping phrases in all of Scripture: *_“able to save to the uttermost”_* (Hebrews 7:25, NKJV). The Greek word *_panteles_* — translated as *_“uttermost”_* — carries the dual meaning of *_“completely”_* and *_“forever”_*. The Ascended Christ saves completely — no sin too deep, no failure too catastrophic, no wound too ancient. And He saves forever — not provisionally, not temporarily, not subject to review. His salvation is as permanent as His priesthood, and His priesthood is established *_“by the power of an endless life”_* (Hebrews 7:16, NKJV).

 

Is there a soul here today burdened by the weight of past failure? The Advocate on High has already presented your case. Is there a believer here whose faith has been shaken by prolonged trial? The Intercessor who passed through death itself is interceding for your steadfastness at this very moment. The enemy may bring accusations, but he brings them to a court where the Judge is the Father and the Advocate is the Son — and the verdict was settled at Calvary and confirmed at the empty tomb.

*The Blessing He Released and the Joy It Produced.*

 

Luke’s account of the Ascension is saturated with blessing and worship. Before He was taken up, *_“He lifted up His hands and blessed them”_* (Luke 24:50, NKJV). The last act of the visible Christ on earth was not a command, not a correction, not a warning — it was a blessing. And the disciples, rather than mourning His departure, *_“returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God”_* (Luke 24:52-53, NKJV).

 

Beloved, this is the Ascension life — a life lived beneath the blessing of lifted, nail-scarred hands; a life of great joy that neither circumstance nor opposition can extinguish; a life of continual worship that makes every day a temple and every breath a prayer. The Ascended Christ has blessed you. Go forth — and live like it!
