In 1988, a young South African activist named Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned for twenty-six years on Robben Island. His voice had been silenced. His movement had been suppressed. And yet — remarkably — the anti-apartheid flame continued to burn across the world, not because Mandela was free to speak, but because thousands of ordinary witnesses carried his message beyond prison walls. Bishops preached it, not because Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a popular Methodist. Students marched in it. Artists sang on it. Musicians composed it into anthems that shook governments. When Mandela finally walked free in 1990, he emerged into a world that his witnesses had already prepared. One man’s testimony, carried by many ordinary voices, changed the destiny of a nation.
Beloved, that is precisely what the Risen Christ accomplished in Acts 1. He was preparing to ascend. His physical, visible presence was about to be withdrawn. And what was His strategy for reaching Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost ends of the earth? Not angels. Not thunderclaps. Not a supernatural spectacle alone. His strategy was to witness ordinary, frightened, recently failed human beings upon whom He would pour His extraordinary Spirit.

*The Witness Is Not the Message — The Witness Carries the Message*
There is a vital distinction that every believer must settle: you are not the gospel. You are the carrier of the gospel. Jesus prayed to the Father: *_“As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world”_* (John 17:18, NKJV). The sending pattern is Christ’s own sending — purposeful, sacrificial, world-directed. You have not accidentally ended up in your neighbourhood, your workplace, your family network, or your nation. You have been divinely sent there. Your address or style is your assignment. Your relationships are your mission field. Your testimony is your most powerful sermon. God healed me of asthma; many ailments have been cured whenever I proclaim His message using this weapon.
The disciples in Acts 1 were not theological giants. Women have fulfilled many missions for Christ in the Bible and in our World. Shame to those who proclaim patriarchy with bias: Galatians 3:28 says, *_“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”_*
Peter had denied Christ three times. Thomas had doubted. Apostle Paul had persecuted many Christian disciples before his encounter with the Risen Christ. Christ’s eleven remaining disciples had all fled at Gethsemane. *_Yet the Risen Christ did not disqualify them based on their failures. He commissioned them based on His resurrection. And that same commissioning covers every failure, every inadequacy, and every past retreat in this assembly today._*

*The Power That Makes Witnessing Possible*
Jesus did not command the disciples to witness before He promised them power. He said, *_“wait for the Promise of the Father”_* (Acts 1:4, NKJV) before He said *_“you shall be witnesses.”_* The sequence is deliberate and irreversible. *Witnessing without the Holy Spirit’s power produces RELIGION. Witnessing with the Holy Spirit’s power produces REVIVAL. The difference between a lifeless testimony and a life-transforming one is not eloquence, education, or experience — it is ANOINTING. Alleluia!*
This is the standing offer of Resurrectiontide to every believer: the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you (Romans 8:11, NKJV). You are not resourced with a secondary or diminished portion of divine power. You carry resurrection power — the most explosive force in the universe — within your mortal body. *The question is not whether the power is available. The question is whether you are willing to be a conduit through which it flows.*

*Jerusalem First: Witness Begins Where You Are.*
The commission in Acts 1:8 is geographical and intentional — Jerusalem first, then Judea, then Samaria, then the ends of the earth. Jerusalem was home — the most familiar, the most dangerous, the most personally costly place to witness. It is always harder to testify amongst those who knew you before Christ changed you. Yet that is precisely where the commission begins.
Your Jerusalem may be your family compound, your office, your street, your WhatsApp group, or your child’s school. Begin there. Witness there. The Risen Christ, who sends you to the ends of the earth, first asks you to be faithful at your own front door. Be the witness your Jerusalem needs — and trust the Holy Spirit to carry the flame from there to the uttermost parts of the earth.
