In the summer of 1973, Charles Colson — Washington’s most feared political operative, known across America as President Nixon’s “hatchet man” — sat in his car outside a friend’s house in Massachusetts and wept so inconsolably that he could not drive. His friend Tom Phillips had just read to him a passage from C.S. Lewis’s *Mere Christianity* on the nature of pride, and something inside this hard-edged power-broker had broken entirely. He cried out to God in that car in the summer darkness, and forgiveness — total, unsolicited, unearned — descended upon him. The Watergate indictments, the public disgrace, the prison sentence — all of that was still coming. But the forgiveness had already arrived. Before his legs were ever free to walk through prison gates and out again, his soul was forgiven, freed, and of good cheer. Prison Fellowship and a lifetime of Kingdom ministry followed — not from a man who had earned his restoration, but from a man upon whom forgiveness had descended before he had done anything at all to deserve it.

*The Faith That Reaches Before the Word Is Spoken.*
Jesus crosses the sea, returns to His own city, and a paralytic is brought to Him. Matthew records the pivotal detail: *_“When Jesus saw their faith”_* (v.2). The faith was not simply the paralytic’s alone — it was in those who carried him. Before one word is spoken to the man on the mat, interceding faith has already done its work. Beloved, never underestimate the carrying power of your prayer for another. Someone’s breakthrough today may be waiting entirely upon your willingness to bring them to the feet of Jesus.

*The Word That Surprised the Crowd.*
The crowd expected Jesus to address the paralysis — the visible, presenting problem. Instead, He addresses the deeper wound: *_“Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you”_* (v.2). Not “Rise and walk” first — forgiveness first. Christ consistently treats the root before the fruit, the inward before the outward. Beloved, whatever you have brought before God today, He sees beneath the surface problem to the deeper need — and He speaks to that first.

*The Authority That Silences Every Objection.*
The scribes object internally: *_“This Man blasphemes!”_* (v.3). Jesus perceives their thoughts and answers with a question that reframes everything: *_“Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?”_* (v.5). He then heals the man as the visible proof of invisible authority. The physical miracle was not the greater work — it was the evidence for the greater work already accomplished. When Christ speaks forgiveness, it is not wishful sentiment; it is the sovereign decree of the Son of Man who holds all authority over sin itself.

*The Walk That Declares What the Word Already Decided.*
*_“Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house”_* (v.6). He arose. The multitude marvelled and glorified God (v.8). This is the sequence: the word of forgiveness produces the walk of freedom. Paul confirms it in Ephesians 4 — having put off the old man (v.22), the believer puts on the new man *_“created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness”_* (v.24). The new walk does not earn the forgiveness; it announces it.
Beloved, has the word of forgiveness already been spoken over your life, yet you are still lying on the mat of guilt and shame? Christ says to you today: *_Son — Daughter — be of good cheer. Your sins are forgiven you. Arise and walk._*
