On 6th August 1926, nineteen-year-old Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel — thirty-five miles of treacherous, freezing, shark-inhabited waters between France and England. She did not merely complete the crossing — she shattered the men’s world record by nearly two hours. What made her achievement extraordinary was not that she was the strongest swimmer in the water that day. It was that she kept swimming when every natural resource — warmth, energy, visibility, and comfort — had been completely exhausted. When asked how she endured, she replied simply: *_“I knew if I stopped I would never make it.”_* Her greatest strength emerged precisely at the point of her greatest exhaustion.
Beloved, Paul writes 2 Corinthians 12 from the most vulnerable position of his entire apostolic ministry. He describes a thorn in the flesh — the precise nature of which the Holy Spirit deliberately withholds from Scripture, so that every believer in every generation can place their own thorn into that sacred space. Three times Paul besought the Lord for its removal. Three times heaven was silent on removal — but thunderously clear on the alternative: *_“My grace is sufficient for you.”_*

*The Thorn: Weakness by Divine Permission*
Paul’s thorn was not an accident, an oversight, or a punishment — it was a divinely permitted instrument of grace. It came, Paul says, “lest I be exalted above measure” (2 Corinthians 12:7, NKJV). God was not being cruel. He was being protective — shielding His greatest apostle from the most dangerous weapon the enemy could deploy against him: pride. The thorn that seemed to diminish Paul was actually the instrument that kept him in the position where God’s power could flow most freely through him.

*The Grace: Sufficient by Divine Declaration*
*_“My grace is sufficient”_* — the Greek word for sufficient is *_arkeō,_* meaning to be enough, to ward off, to protect, to be perfectly adequate for every demand placed upon it. God did not say His grace would make Paul comfortable. He said it would make him capable. There is a world of difference. Grace does not always remove the thorn. Grace makes the thorn irrelevant to the outcome — because the power that flows through the weakened vessel is no longer human but divine.

*The Paradox: Strength Perfected in Weakness*
Paul arrives at one of the most counterintuitive declarations in all of Scripture: *_“when I am weak, then I am strong”_* (2 Corinthians 12:10, NKJV). This is not resignation — it is revelation. The believer who has exhausted every human resource and cast themselves entirely upon divine grace becomes the most dangerous instrument in God’s hands. History confirms it — the most world-changing servants of God have consistently been those who discovered that their weakness was not an obstacle to God’s power but the very channel through which it flowed most freely.
Beloved, your thorn is not the end of your story. It is the beginning of your greatest chapter.
Stop striving. Yield. Receive His grace — and watch His strength perfect itself in your weakness.
