🕯️ *PREPARATORY PRAYERS*

Before We Receive the Word…

*_“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.”_*

— Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV).

*1. The Prayer for a Fasting Heart.*

_“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?”_

— Isaiah 58:6 (NKJV).

🔥 *_God of the chosen fast, give every worker here today not merely the discipline of fasting but the heart of fasting — the inward longing for You that makes the table unattractive in comparison with the throne, and the awareness of Kingdom urgency that makes forgoing physical food not a hardship but a willing exchange for something of infinitely greater value. Let our fasting be motivated by love and hunger for You alone, not by religious obligation or public performance. Let it be the kind of fast You have chosen — the fast that looses wickedness, undoes burdens, liberates the oppressed, and breaks the yoke of every captive we intercede for. Start this work of fasting grace in our hearts today, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

*2. The Prayer Against Hypocritical Fasting.*

_“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting.”_

— Matthew 6:16 (NKJV).

🔥 *_Searcher of hearts, we come before You with the honest acknowledgement that fasting, like every spiritual discipline, can be pursued with entirely the wrong motivation — the hunger for human admiration rather than divine encounter, the performance of self-denial without the substance of genuine surrender. Cleanse our fasting of every hypocritical thread, Lord. Let our fasts be known to You alone — private, sincere, and spiritually motivated — until the One who sees in secret rewards openly. Deliver us from the fast that impresses people but changes nothing in the spiritual atmosphere, and give us the fast that moves heaven, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

*3. The Prayer for the Breakthrough Fast.*

_“However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”_

— Matthew 17:21 (NKJV).

🔥 *_God of the impossible breakthrough, there are things in our lives, our families, our congregation, and our community that have not yielded to ordinary prayer — strongholds that have survived many declarations, needs that have outlasted many intercessions, captivities that have persisted despite consistent petition. We bring every such unyielding mountain before You today, knowing some victories are reserved for the combined force of prayer and fasting. We commit ourselves to the discipline that breaks through to what nothing else has reached, in the full faith that this kind indeed goes out — by prayer and fasting — in Jesus’ mighty Name!_* 🔥

*4. The Prayer for Fasting That Brings Revelation.*

_“Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.”_

— Daniel 9:3 (NKJV).

🔥 *_Revealer of mysteries, as You answered Daniel’s fasting prayer with the angel Gabriel and an extraordinary unveiling of prophetic revelation, so we ask that our fasting would open channels of insight that ordinary days have not accessed. Let fasting create in us spiritual clarity, receptive silence, and heightened sensitivity to Your Spirit, enabling us to receive the direction, wisdom, and divine strategy our Mission so urgently needs. What ordinary days have not shown us, let fasting days reveal — the blueprint of heaven for the breakthrough we have been contending for, in Jesus’ triumphant Name!_* 🔥

📜 THE TEACHING

*FASTING: THE HIDDEN POWER*

TEXTS: Matthew 6:16-18; Isaiah 58:6-7; Matthew 17:14-21; Daniel 10:2-14; Acts 13:2-3.

*INTRODUCTION*

*_“Fasting: The Hidden Power”_* arrives at precisely the moment in the Warrior’s Walk when the worker has been armed, has knowledge of the enemy, and has begun to pray with authority — but has perhaps not yet fully engaged the dimension of prayer that has historically produced the most dramatic, the most intractable, and the most spectacular breakthroughs in the history of the Church: the indispensable combination of fasting with prayer.

Jesus did not say *if* you fast—He said *when* you fast (Matthew 6:16). The Sermon on the Mount’s framework assumes fasting as a regular Kingdom practice as naturally as prayer and giving. Yet fasting remains, in the contemporary Church, among the most consistently neglected spiritual disciplines—frequently discussed, rarely practised, and almost never integrated into the regular rhythm of personal and corporate Kingdom warfare.

The reasons for this neglect are not mysterious. Fasting is physically uncomfortable. It requires an intentional surrender of one of the most immediately pleasurable human activities — eating. You cannot do it casually or distractedly. And it produces no visible external display of spiritual activity that feeds the ministry’s public narrative. By design, it is hidden — *_“so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place”_* (Matthew 6:18). Its hiddenness is precisely what makes it spiritually potent.

Isaiah 58 offers the most comprehensive Old Testament theology of fasting—and its emphasis is striking. The people had been fasting, but God remained unmoved. The reason was devastatingly simple: their fasts were self-centred performances rather than self-emptying surrenders. The fast God had chosen was entirely other-directed in its effect — it loosed wickedness, undid burdens, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and broke every yoke. This is the fasting theology the contemporary Church most neglects: fasting is not a personal spiritual upgrade exercise—it is a weapon in the arsenal of compassionate warfare on behalf of the captive, the hungry, and the oppressed.

Matthew 17:14-21 presents the most diagnostically important New Testament passage on fasting — the disciples’ failure to cast out a demon, and Jesus’ explanation: *_“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”_* The implication is extraordinary: there exists a category of spiritual opposition that is specifically beyond the reach of prayer alone. Not because prayer is insufficient in itself—but because this particular dimension of warfare requires a level of consecration, a depth of spiritual concentration, and a degree of flesh-subduing that only sustained prayer combined with deliberate fasting produces.

Daniel 10:2-14 provides one of Scripture’s most transparent windows into what happens in the invisible realm when a worker fasts and prays. Daniel fasted for twenty-one days. On the first day, the angelic messenger was dispatched. For twenty-one days that angel fought through spiritual resistance — the *prince of Persia* — until Michael came to assist. The breakthrough came. The revelation arrived. The point is not angelology — it is persistence: the fasting prayer sustained for twenty-one days was engaging an unseen battle that casual prayer had never even reached. The worker who fasts regularly routinely engages battles the non-fasting worker never accesses.

Beloved worker, fasting is not a relic of an ascetic era that the grace age has rendered obsolete. It is a hidden power that has always been available, remains fully operational, and awaits the worker bold enough to pick it up and use it with the same disciplined intentionality the great saints of every generation have wielded.

*1. WHAT FASTING TRULY IS*

Matthew 6:16-18; Isaiah 58:6.

*_“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free?”_*

A genuine, Kingdom-effective fast is marked by:

*_A voluntary, intentional relinquishing of physical sustenance for the deliberate purpose of heightened spiritual focus, consecration, and engagement with God_*

*_A heart motivation rooted in hunger for God and concern for His purposes — not in religious performance, self-punishment, or the desire for social credibility among other workers_*

*_An outward expression of an inward surrender — the fast is not the goal but the vehicle, the physical act that accompanies and amplifies the spiritual intention_*

*_A flesh-subduing discipline that releases the spirit to operate with greater clarity, sensitivity, and freedom in the things of God than any well-fed comfort season ever produces._*

*LESSON:*

Fasting is not starvation for spiritual points. It is a chosen, deliberate, love-motivated surrender of a legitimate appetite so an even deeper appetite—for God, for breakthrough, for the liberation of the captive—can be more fully expressed and more powerfully engaged.

*2. THE POWER RELEASED BY FASTING*

Matthew 17:21; Daniel 10:12-14.

*_“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”_*

Fasting, combined with prayer, releases:

*_A level of spiritual authority and concentrated intercession that reaches strongholds inaccessible to prayer alone — strongholds that have survived years of otherwise faithful petition_*

*_A depth of personal consecration that strips away the competing appetites and distractions that reduce a worker’s spiritual sharpness during ordinary seasons of comfortable ministry_*

*_A dimension of angelic cooperation in the invisible realm — as Daniel’s fasting sustained the engagement that ultimately delivered the revelation he so urgently needed_*

*_A divine responsiveness that matches the intensity of a consecrated, fasting seeker with proportionally extraordinary revelation, direction, and long-awaited breakthrough._*

*LESSON:*

Fasting does not change God — it changes the fasting worker. It repositions the consecrated believer in the spiritual realm, sharpens their discernment, deepens their access, and enables them to receive and release what they could not without it.

*3. THE FORMS AND FREEDOM OF FASTING*

Acts 13:2-3; Esther 4:16; Daniel 1:12.

*_“As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'”_*

Different forms of fasting carry full Biblical warrant:

*_The complete fast — absolute abstinence from food for a limited period, as in Esther’s three-day fast for national deliverance, practised with acute spiritual urgency_*

*_The partial fast — the deliberate reduction of food intake as Daniel practised, removing pleasant foods, meats, and wine for an extended season of consecration_*

*_The corporate fast — the gathered Church or mission community fasting together, as at Antioch, which immediately preceded the release of the first-ever missionary team_*

*_The private fast — the personal, undisclosed fast of the individual worker, practised regularly as part of the secret place rhythm, known only to God and rewarded openly by Him._*

*LESSON:*

There is no single prescribed form of fasting that must be uniformly followed. Scripture prescribes the practice, the heart, and the purpose—the specific form responds to the Spirit’s leading, the worker’s capacity, and the nature of the Kingdom urgency being addressed.

*4. FASTING AS A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE WEAPON*

Matthew 6:17-18; Luke 2:37; 1 Corinthians 9:27.

*_“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place.”_*

The worker who has integrated fasting as a lifestyle discipline:

*_Fasts regularly — not only in acute crises but as part of the sustainable rhythm of a consecrated, spiritually alert, permanently commissioned Kingdom life_*

*_Fasts secretly — without announcing, performing, or weaponising it for social credibility, reserving its reward exclusively for the Father who sees in secret_*

*_Fasts strategically — targeting specific strongholds, specific intercession burdens, and specific Kingdom assignments with deliberate and focused fasting engagement_*

*_Fasts joyfully — with the inward gladness of one who has chosen the better part, knowing that the spiritual richness of a fasting season far exceeds the temporary comfort of the food it willingly and lovingly displaces._*

*LESSON:*

The most consistently powerful Kingdom workers throughout Church history have been, without exception, people who fasted regularly. This is not coincidence — it is causation. The discipline that subdues the flesh and consecrates the spirit produces a worker whose prayer life, spiritual sensitivity, and Kingdom effectiveness operate at levels that comfortable, untested Christianity simply cannot reach.

🙏 *INTERCESSORY PRAYERS*

After the Word — Into the World We Go

*1. The Prayer for the Unyielding Breakthrough.*

_“However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”_

— Matthew 17:21 (NKJV).

🔥 *_Lord of the breakthrough that has not yet come, we lay before You today every unyielded territory in our personal lives, our families, and Christ’s Good News Mission — the sicknesses that have not responded, the souls that have resisted every evangelistic approach, the family members whose hardness of heart has outlasted years of faithful prayer, the financial restrictions that have persisted despite consistent giving and intercession. We declare today our commitment to the prayer-and-fasting combination that reaches what ordinary prayer has not reached — and we ask You to release through our consecrated intercession the breakthroughs You have already prepared and appointed for this season of our Mission, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

*2. The Prayer for a Fasting Culture.*

_“As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me, Barnabas and Saul.'”_

— Acts 13:2 (NKJV).

🔥 *_God of Antioch, let what happened at Antioch happen in Christ’s Good News Mission — a culture of regular, corporate, Holy Spirit-directed fasting from which Your clearest guidance, Your boldest commissionings, and Your most dramatic strategic releases proceed. Let fasting become not an exceptional emergency measure but a regular Kingdom rhythm in our congregation — personal fasts, leadership fasts, congregation-wide fasts, and targeted, strategic mission fasts. And as we fast and minister to You, speak to us as You spoke at Antioch — directing, assigning, and releasing us into the next dimension of our Kingdom calling, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

*3. The Prayer for Fasting Revelation.*

_“Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting.”_

— Daniel 9:3 (NKJV).

🔥 *_God of revelation, who answered Daniel’s fasting prayer with such sweeping prophetic clarity, we intercede for the revelatory dimension of fasting to be experienced across our leadership and intercession teams. Let our fasting seasons produce not merely physical consecration but genuine spiritual illumination — clarity of direction for the Mission’s next strategic season, discernment of threats currently obscured from natural vision, and the kind of heaven-dispatched wisdom that guides a mission through complex national and spiritual terrain. Speak in our fasting seasons, Lord — and we will listen with unprecedented attentiveness, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

*4. The Prayer for Holy Discipline.*

_“But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”_

— 1 Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV).

🔥 *_God of holy discipline, we intercede for every worker in Christ’s Good News Mission who has struggled to establish fasting as a consistent discipline — not for lack of desire but for lack of sustained will to deny the body what it insistently demands. Give every such worker the grace of holy self-discipline—the grace Paul describes as bringing the body into subjection, not as self-hatred but as ministry-preserving, anointing-protecting, flesh-subduing consecration. Let none of us preach what we do not practise or call others to a level of spiritual consecration we have quietly abandoned in our own private lives. Discipline us graciously but thoroughly, Lord — in Jesus’ triumphant and altogether glorious Name!_* 🔥
