Beloved, Romans 5:1-5 is a divine roadmap for the soul. The Apostle Paul writes not as a theoretician but as a *veteran of suffering*—imprisoned, shipwrecked, persecuted. Yet he declares: *“We glory in tribulations!”* How? Because tribulation forges perseverance, perseverance builds character, and character births a hope that *“does not disappoint.”*
This is the heartbeat of Charles Wesley’s hymn, *“Head of Thy Church Triumphant.”* Wesley, the 18th child of Susanna Annesley and Rev. Samuel Wesley, knew struggle intimately. His conversion on Whitsunday 1738 transformed a restless soul into a poet of divine hope. He penned 6,500 hymns, many amid persecution, reminding us: *“God is at the end of the tunnel.”*
Wesley’s omitted fifth verse speaks of divine guidance *“through torrents of temptation”* and the *“fire of tribulation.”* Like Stephen, who saw Christ standing at God’s right hand (Acts 7:55), Wesley urges us to fix our eyes on the *Church Triumphant*—as that cloud of witnesses cheers us onward.
I feel led to apply this exposition to *Triumph for All Seasons*
- *To the Weary in Hope* (Romans 5:3-4): Your pain is not purposeless. Like gold when undergoing refining, your trials are crafting resilience. Please, cling to Christ—your ashes will become beauty.
- *To the Sceptic:* Faith is not blind optimism but *tested assurance*. Since your faithlessness cannot cause God to vanish, what will it cost you to allow God into your consciousness and see if he would ignore you. Witness the saints who, amid storms, found peace that defies logic.
- *To Leaders in Industry:* Steward wealth with integrity. Profit margins falter but God’s provision endures. Let perseverance build ethical legacies through you.
- *To Governing Authorities* (Romans 13:1): Lead with humility. When you midwife systems shaped by justice, God’s mercy on you (Hebrews 8:12,) will reflect Heaven’s heart in all you do.
- *To Interfaith Dialogue:* Seek common ground in compassion. Embrace tolerance. From genuine experience, we have discovered that sufferings’ role in shaping character transcends creed.
*Conclusion: The Song of Moses & the Lamb*
Beloved, we are the *Church Militant*—yet already tasting triumph. Charles Wesley’s hymn dares us to sing through the fire: *“Through Thee we shall break through them all, and sing the song of Moses!”*
*This is our inheritance:* trials today, glory tomorrow. So run, endure, hope. As Paul promises, *“the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.”* The same Spirit that raised Christ dwells in *you*—equipping you to rise from struggle to splendour.
