*ABOUT THE HYMN AND ITS AUTHOR*

Septimus Winner was born on May 11, 1827, and he died on November 22, 1902.

This is a song describing the hope set before us which serves as a strong consolation: “Whispering Hope”

The text was written and the tune was composed both, under the pseudonym of Alice Hawthorne, by Septimus Winner.

“Whispering Hope” was published in 1868.

Based on Hebrews 6:19, *_“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the presence behind the veil.”_*

The text of the song refers to the anchor that keeps the soul unwavering — the “Whispering Hope” for all Christians.

This is a beautiful hymn of hope that we often sing in our worship because it does have Biblical references.

From stanza 1 we learn that hope is a source of comfort

“Soft as the voice of an angel, Breathing a lesson unheard…”

*A.* Even where there is no empirical evidence that angels speak to anyone today, hope is like the voice of an angel because it comes to us from God: 1 Thess. 2:16.

*B.* This hope whispers her comforting word because it pours forth the love of God in our hearts: Rom. 5:1-5.

*C.* And it gives us comfort for the future by making it possible to wait for the sunshine tomorrow: Gal. 5:5.

From stanza 2 we learn that hope is a source of light in darkness.

“If, in the dusk of the twilight, Dim be the regions afar,

Will not the deepening darkness Brighten each glimmering star?…”

*A.* Sometimes it seems that the dimness of earth discourages us, but one of the things which abides to keep us going is hope: 1 Cor. 13:13.

*B.* Thus, even though we must suffer the sorrows of earth’s darkness, we can still rejoice in hope: Rom. 12:9-12.

*C.* And this hope enables us to watch for the breaking of day because it points us to a brighter future: Col. 1:5.

From stanza 3 we learn that hope is a source of steadfastness in our lives.

“Hope, as an anchor so steadfast, Rends the dark veil for the soul,

Whither the Master has entered, Robbing the grave of its goal…”

*A.* Hope is an anchor so steadfast because looking toward the future it provides the benefit of patience in our lives even now: Rom. 8.24-25.

*B.* This hope is possible because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Master who entered the veil and robbed the grave of its goal: 1 Pet. 1.3

*C.* Therefore, we look forward to the coming of Him who is our blest hope of glory as the fruition, i.e., the fulfilment or realization, of our hope: Col. 1.27, Tit. 2.13.

The chorus reminds us of the blessed benefits of true hope:

“Whispering Hope, O how welcome thy voice,

Making my heart in it sorrow rejoice.”

While God may not speak directly to everyone today, He does whisper to us through His written word about the hope set before us.

Faith is described in the Bible as the substance of things hoped for (Heb. 11:1). This is a good reason to find strength in the power of hope.

Biblical hope is, “desire plus expectation with regard to God’s promises.”

This grand old song contains several tender expressions which allude to the quiet comfort and strength that we can find in God’s “Whispering Hope.”

✝️ Beloved, let us have a look into –

👑❤‍🔥 *Hebrews 6:16-20* (NKJV). 👑❤‍🔥

*_“For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”_*

What a magnificent passage, dear friend! This perfectly complements our expectation as we receive our “WHISPERING HOPE” – showing us that our hope is not wishful thinking, but an *anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast!*

Jesus Himself is our forerunner who has entered behind the veil! Blessed be His Holy Name. Alleluia! 🙏⚓✝️

*_“So David rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David. The period that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was established firmly… And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honour, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days. Then Solomon awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.”_*

In the quiet hours of dawn, when the world holds its breath between night and day, there exists a sacred moment—a whisper that changes everything. Young Solomon experienced such a moment at Gibeon. Imagine this twenty-year-old prince, inheriting not just a throne but the weight of an entire nation’s destiny. The responsibility could have crushed him, the pressure could have overwhelmed him, but in that divine encounter, God’s whispering hope transformed everything.

Like the gentle melody of our beloved hymn suggests, hope came “soft as the voice of an angel, breathing a lesson unheard.” Solomon didn’t hear thunderous commands or overwhelming mandates—he heard the tender whisper of divine possibility. In that sacred dream, God offered him anything his heart desired. The young king could have chosen military might, vast wealth, or political power. Instead, he chose wisdom—and in that choice, he accepted the whispering hope that would define his reign and legacy.

*_Today, beloved, that same whispering hope calls to each of us, offering not worldly treasures but divine transformation that surpasses all earthly understanding._*

*Let us understand “WHISPERING HOPE” in this sermon’s context:*

“Whispering Hope” is God’s gentle, persistent voice that speaks to our hearts in moments of transition, uncertainty, and decision. It is the divine invitation that comes not with thunder and earthquake, but in the still, small voice that transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary encounters with the Almighty. It whispers promises of divine wisdom, supernatural provision, and eternal purpose to those who have ears to hear.

Solomon found himself at the crossroads of destiny. His father David, the mighty warrior king, had passed away, leaving behind a united Israel and a son who must now fill seemingly impossible shoes. The kingdom was established, yes, but establishing a kingdom and maintaining it are vastly different challenges.

Picture the scene, beloved! Here stands a young man, perhaps overwhelmed by the magnitude of his inheritance. The elders look to him for leadership, the people expect greatness, and the neighbouring nations watch for signs of weakness. In this moment of tremendous responsibility, Solomon could have relied on human wisdom, political strategy, or military might. Instead, he chose worship.

At Gibeon, the high place where the tabernacle of meeting stood, Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings. This wasn’t mere ritual—this was surrender. This was a young king saying, *_“LORD, I need You more than I need anything else.”_* And in that moment of humble worship, heaven responded with whispering hope!

But here’s where the story becomes profoundly relevant to our modern struggles. God’s response to Solomon’s worship came as a test disguised as a gift. *_“Ask! What shall I give you?”_* seemed like the answer to every prayer, but it was actually the greatest complication Solomon would ever face.

Think about it—unlimited divine provision, but the responsibility to choose wisely! The complication wasn’t God’s reluctance to bless; it was the challenge of spiritual discernment in a moment of unlimited possibility. Solomon could have chosen immediate gratification: wealth to solve financial pressures, military might to intimidate enemies, or long life to extend his reign.

The complication for us today mirrors Solomon’s dilemma. *_God’s Whispering Hope often comes not with clear directives but with divine opportunities that require spiritual wisdom to navigate._* 🤩 When doors open, when possibilities arise, when breakthrough moments present themselves, how do we discern which path leads to God’s perfect will? *_The greatest complication of divine blessing is learning to choose eternal value over temporal satisfaction._*

Solomon’s complication was compounded by his youth and inexperience. *_“I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in,”_* he confessed. Yet this admission of weakness became the gateway to supernatural strength. His honest vulnerability before God positioned him to receive heaven’s greatest treasures.

Solomon’s response reveals the transformative power of accepting God’s whispering hope. Instead of choosing what he lacked, he chose what God valued. *_“Give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil.”_*

What a magnificent resolution! In choosing wisdom, Solomon didn’t just solve his immediate problem—he accessed the very mind of God. The Scripture declares that God was so pleased with this choice that He gave Solomon not only wisdom but also riches and honour beyond measure. He became the best amongst those who live *_in Solomon’s time._* Don’t listen to Satan when he tells you that God’s word says no one will be wiser, wealthier, and more prosperous than Solomon. God did not say so. *_Read your Bible with an Eagle’s eye._*

Notice the complete resolution: Solomon awakened from the dream and immediately went to Jerusalem to worship before the ark of the covenant. He offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, then celebrated with all his servants. *_Before the manifestation of your dream, appreciate God for its manifestation: Solomon accepted His Whispering Hope, received, and celebrated it!_*

The resolution wasn’t just personal—it was national. Solomon’s wise choice ushered in Israel’s golden age. His reign brought peace, prosperity, and international recognition. The African Leader, the gorgeous Queen of Sheba would later declare, “I only heard a half of the reports about King Solomon: *_The half was not told me!”_* When we accept God’s whispering hope, the blessings extend far beyond our individual lives!

🦅👑 *Permit me to apply God’s wisdom to those He wants to reach:* 🍇❤‍🔥

i. *To the Penitent, Troubled Soul Seeking Christ’s Touch:*

Dear searching heart, your midnight hour of desperation is actually your Gibeon moment! Just as Solomon found hope in humble worship, Christ whispers to your troubled soul: *_“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”_* (Matthew 11:28 NKJV). Your brokenness is not disqualification—it’s your invitation to divine encounter. Accept His Whispering Hope today!

ii. *To the Atheistic Person:*

Beloved sceptic, your intellectual honesty is admirable. Could you please consider Solomon’s empirical approach? He responded to God’s test through worship and received measurable results. The same God who gave Solomon supernatural wisdom offers you evidence of His reality through transformed lives and answered prayers you can see in genuine Christians’ lives. *_“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him”_* (Psalm 34:8 NKJV).

Accept the whispering hope that your reasoning cannot explain but your heart desperately needs.

iii. *To the Multi-Faith Community:*

Friends of various traditions, Solomon’s encounter reveals that the God of Israel doesn’t merely compete with other deities—He transcends them entirely. His Whispering Hope offers what no religious system can provide: direct, personal relationship with the Creator. *_“There is no other God besides Me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides Me”_* (Isaiah 45:21 NKJV).

Every sincere spiritual search INSPIRED by God ultimately leads to Christ.

iv. *To the Everyday People:*

Ordinary saints, your daily struggles are not insignificant to God! Solomon’s wisdom wasn’t reserved for royal courts—it was demonstrated in settling disputes between common people. Your workplace dilemmas, family challenges, and financial pressures are opportunities to apply divine wisdom. *_“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him”_* (James 1:5 NKJV).

Accept the whispering hope that transforms ordinary lives into extraordinary testimonies!

v. *To Business Organisations in Economic Logjam:*

Corporate leaders, Solomon’s reign proves that divine wisdom generates unprecedented prosperity. When godly principles guide business decisions, supernatural favour follows. Your current economic challenges are invitations to seek heaven’s strategies. *_“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths”_* (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV).

Accept the whispering hope that turns financial crisis into divine opportunity!

vi. *To My Revered Ecclesiastic Leaders:*

Shepherds of God’s flock, Solomon’s example reminds us that true spiritual authority flows from humble dependence upon God. Your congregations need leaders who seek divine wisdom above human applause. Ministry burnout often results from relying on human strength rather than divine enablement. *_“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts”_* (Zechariah 4:6 NKJV).

Accept the whispering hope that transforms religious activity into authentic spiritual authority!

vii. *To Leaders of Every Tier of Government:*

Your Excellences, and esteemed honourable leaders, Solomon’s reign demonstrates that nations flourish under divine guidance. Your political decisions carry eternal consequences for millions of lives. The same God who gave Solomon wisdom to govern Israel offers supernatural insight for contemporary governance. *_“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”_* (Proverbs 14:34 NKJV).

Accept the whispering hope that transforms political ambition into divine service!

🦅👑 *Where does the word of life challenge you?* 👑❤‍🔥

We all owe God a rededication of our lives to the One who created us and knows how we can be better fulfilled. Giving our lives or REDEDICATING OUR LIVES TO CHRIST – IS NOT RELIGION. It is a practical act of submission and trust.

Beloved family, today I challenge you to move beyond religion – and embrace Christ-likeness. No Religion is greater than kindness, tolerance and unconditional love!

I challenge you to move beyond religious routine to authentic relationship with God! Solomon’s encounter wasn’t about maintaining Jewish customs—it was about meeting the living God personally and intimately.

Too many of us have settled for church attendance or designated Worship in Mosques or Shrines instead of Christ acceptance. Most Religious humans worship for ritual observance instead of radical transformation. We’ve mistaken religious activity for spiritual vitality; ceremony for relationship; and tradition for transformation!

But Christ calls you higher! He doesn’t want your religious performance—He wants your surrendered heart. God doesn’t need your perfect attendance or accurate keeping of the 5-times-daily devotions alone—God desires your authentic worship: God needs your compassionate love and care for other people who may not believe in your pattern of worship. God isn’t impressed by your theological knowledge—He’s seeking your humble obedience.

*Today, will you accept His whispering hope that transforms religion into relationship, duty into delight, and obligation into overwhelming love? Will you move from knowing about God to knowing God personally? Devil knows about God too. Will you exchange your religious mask for authentic intimacy with the Almighty?*

The invitation stands: Come *_not to religion_*, but to Christ! Come not to impress others, but to encounter the living God! Come not with your achievements, but with your soul’s desperate need to honour God’s will for your good life! Accept the whispering hope that changes everything!

VIII. *Fight My Battle!*
*Scripture:* _“For Your name’s sake, O LORD, revive me! In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble. In Your mercy cut off my enemies, and destroy all those who afflict my soul; for I am Your servant”_ (Psalm 143:11-12) NKJV.

🦅 *Prayer: _By the Holy Spirit’s anointing and reviving fire, O LORD, end my sorrow, cut off my unrelenting enemies and destroy those who afflict my soul. Let Your whispering hope silence every voice of discouragement, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

IX. *Break Every Chain!*
*Scripture:* _“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me… to proclaim liberty to the captives”_ (Isaiah 61:1) NKJV.

🦅 *Prayer: _God of supernatural breakthrough, by Your mighty power, shatter every chain that binds Your people! Assist us to do Your Will. Let Your Whispering Hope break strongholds of addiction, depression, and despair. Set the captives free, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

X. *Heal Every Wound!*
*Scripture:* _“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities… and by His stripes we are healed”_ (Isaiah 53:5) NKJV.

🦅 *Prayer: _Great Physician, let Your healing virtue flow through every broken heart and wounded soul. By Your Whispering Hope, mend marriages, heal the sick, restore families and ministries. Let Your resurrection power manifest, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

XI. *Open The Right Doors!*
*Scripture:* _“I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it”_ (Revelation 3:8) NKJV.

🦅 *Prayer: _Door-opening God, by Your sovereign authority, unlock every opportunity that the enemy has sealed! Let Your Whispering Hope create pathways where there were none. Open doors of promotion, provision, and positive purpose for lives, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

XII. *Destroy The Evil Weapon!*
*Scripture:* _“No weapon formed against you shall prosper”_ (Isaiah 54:17) NKJV.

🦅 *Prayer: _Almighty Warrior, nullify every weapon of destruction formed against Your children! Let Your Whispering Hope disarm every scheme of Your adversary. Destroy weapons of sickness, poverty, and spiritual attack. Let Your divine protection prevail, in Jesus’ Name!_* 🔥

XIII. *Establish Your Promise!*
*Scripture:* _“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us”_ (2 Corinthians 1:20) NKJV.
