Author: Henry Collins, 1827-1919
Tune: ST. CHRYSOSTOM
Composer: J. Barnby, 1838-96
Inspiration: John 10: 10-16, 27.

JESU, my Lord, my God, my All,
Hear me, blest Saviour, when I call;
Hear me, and from Thy dwelling-place.
Pour down the riches of Thy grace:

*Refrain:*

*_Jesu, my Lord, I thee adore,_*
*_O make me love thee more and more._*

*2:*

Jesu, too late I Thee have sought;
How can I love Thee as I ought?
And how to extol Thy matchless fame,
The glorious beauty of Thy Name?

*Refrain:*

*3:*

Jesu, what didst Thou find in me,
That Thou hast dealt so lovingly?
How great the joy that Thou hast brought,
So far, exceeding hope or thought!

*Refrain:*

4: Jesu, of Thee, shall be my song;
To Thee my heart and soul belong;
All that I have or am is Thine,
And Thou, blest Saviour, Thou art mine:

💕🦅 *TEXT: Matthew 5:13-20.* (NKJV.)

🦅 💕

Beloved in Christ, as we gather on this Mothering Sunday of 2025, we shall focus on what Mothers usually nurture their children to excel in: *_LIVING AS LIGHTS!_* in the year of our ultimate triumph. We rejoice in the *GOOD NEWS* of God’s promise to restore, uplift, and empower us. Today, we are not dwelling on Mothers Day celebration alone, but on the broader focus of the theme *“LIVING AS LIGHTS”*, delving into *Matthew 5:13-20* and the implications of being lights in a world that often seems shrouded in darkness.

*The Call to Be Light*

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus declares, *_“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”_* This statement is a profound affirmation of our identity as believers and a call to action. We are not merely receivers of God’s grace but vessels through which His light shines into the world. Our lives are meant to illuminate the path for others, guiding them towards hope, truth, and salvation.

The imagery of light in Scripture carries significant weight. Light represents purity, truth, and the presence of God. In Psalm 112:4, we read, *_“Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness.”_* This verse reassures us that God’s light can shine through us, bringing hope to those around us even in our darkest moments.

*Living as Lights in a Dark World*

As we consider what it means to live as lights, we must acknowledge the unique challenges of our time. We are called to stand firm in societal darkness—where morality is often questioned and despair seems pervasive. Here are practical applications for various groups within our society:

  1. *The Atheistic Individual*

Many who identify as atheists search for meaning and truth in a world that often expresses its chaotic and unjust nature. As believers, we can offer the light of Christ through our actions and words. By living with integrity, compassion, and love, we can demonstrate that faith is not merely a set of beliefs but a transformative relationship with God. Our lives can serve as a testament to the hope and purpose that faith provides.

  1. *Operators of Firms/Businesses Under Economic Distress*

In times of economic uncertainty, business operators may feel overwhelmed and burdened. As lights, we can advocate for ethical practices and integrity in business dealings. Our conduct should reflect the light of Christ, fostering trust and respect in our communities. By prioritising the well-being of employees and customers, we can create environments that survive and thrive, embodying the principles of righteousness described in Psalm 112.

  1. *Anguished Believers*

Many believers face struggles that threaten to extinguish their light. Whether through personal loss, health issues, or financial distress, these challenges can dim our hope. However, we must remember that our circumstances do not extinguish our light. Instead, it shines brightest in the darkest times. We are called to encourage one another, reminding each other of God’s promises and our hope in Christ. We hope that support can reignite the flame of faith in struggling people.

  1. The World’s Religious Teachers*

Religious leaders hold a crucial responsibility in guiding their congregations. As teachers of the Word, we must emphasise the importance of living out our faith authentically. Jesus’ teachings challenge us to reflect His character, promoting love, mercy, and justice. We must be vigilant against the temptation to conform to societal pressures that dilute the message of the Gospel. Instead, we should boldly proclaim the truth, encouraging our congregations to live as lights that draw others to Christ.

  1. *Government of Nations*

Governments play a vital role in shaping societies. Leaders are called to exemplify justice, integrity, and compassion. As lights, they must govern, knowing that their authority is derived from God. When governments uphold righteousness and promote their citizens’ welfare, they reflect Christ’s light in their nations. We should pray for our leaders, asking God to grant them wisdom and courage to enact policies that promote peace and justice.

As we conclude our time together, let us remember that living as lights is not a passive activity; it requires intentionality, dedication, and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. We must engage actively in our communities, shining brightly in every situation.

Let us heed the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:16: *_“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”_* May our lives reflect His glory, drawing others into the light of His love.

In this year of ultimate triumph, let us embrace our identity as lights in a world desperately needing hope. As we go forth, may we carry the assurance that God’s light shines within us, enabling us to impact our families, communities, and the world for His glory.

Let us pray for strength, wisdom, and the conviction to live as lights, radiating God’s love and grace to everyone we encounter.

*Amen.* 💕
