*ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THE HYMN!*
Major Daniel Webster Whittle was born on November 22, 1840, and died on March 4, 1901. He was a 19th-century American gospel song lyricist, evangelist, and Bible teacher.
Whittle mainly wrote under the pseudonym “El Nathan”, although editors of later hymnals routinely credit his actual name.
Daniel Webster Whittle wrote the hymn “Showers of Blessings in the 1800s ′s. This particular hymn is based upon the scripture found in Ezekiel 34:26-27 which reads:
*_“I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing. The trees will yield fruit, and the ground will yield crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the Lord when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.”_*
A couple of comments on the lyrics:
“Sound of abundance of rain”—This particular phrasing is based on the story of Elijah, the prophet, in I Kings 18. The land was in drought, and Elijah challenged and mocked the prophets of Baal regarding God’s promise.
Amid a drought, Elijah poured four barrels of water on the prepared altar. God answered Elijah’s prayer and consumed the sacrifice, wood, and water. Shortly thereafter, Elijah told King Ahab that he heard the sound of an abundance of rain. Elijah was a man of faith. He hadn’t seen a cloud, and he hadn’t felt raindrops. He prayed, and prayed, and prayed—seven times—until the rain came.
And when God sent the rain, it wasn’t just a brief rain, but an abundance of rain.
God promises blessings in our lives and sends them in showers—spiritual blessings, relationship blessings, financial blessings, the Word of God and the preached word —an abundance of blessings – pressed down, shaken together and running over.
*_“Mercy drops round us are falling”_* – Hosea 10:12 says, *_“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he comes to rain righteousness upon you.”_*
The Bible promises that the Lord will rain righteousness down on those who sow righteousness.
For those who seek the Lord. I believe God constantly showers us with mercy. We should look for those drops of mercy and be thankful for the “little” things God does for us daily.
Those little brief showers of His grace and mercy remind us of how good our God is, and they should inspire us to praise Him and be thankful.
Verse three, which is omitted in some hymnbooks, reads:

While the *_“Showers of Blessing”_* described in Ezekiel 34:25-31 bring numerous gains, they also carry potential pitfalls in which believers must not be entrapped. It is essential to remain vigilant, grateful, and focused on God, ensuring that blessings lead to deeper faith and effective service rather than any evil like complacency or entitlement. By doing so, believers can fully embrace the abundant life God desires for them while being mindful of their responsibility to others. Let us examine the Pitfalls before basking in the gains of the showers of blessing:
*Complacency:*
In our contemporary world of vanity, one can decipher that blessings can come with the temptation to become complacent. When people experience God’s provision and peace, they often neglect their spiritual disciplines or take God’s blessings for granted, leading to spiritual stagnation.
*Entitlement:*
The love for the “Quick Prosperity” messages has caused many believers to feel entitled to expect blessings without the discipline of hard work and the corresponding commitment to God. This attitude can undermine the spirit of gratitude and dependence on God’s grace.
*Misplaced Trust:*
In times of abundance, many believers get used to trusting in material blessings rather than in God (Ezekiel 34:30). This shift in focus has led to idolatry and a disconnect from the trustworthy source of their blessings.
*Division Among the Blessed:*
The heretical information peddled by the false teachers and critics of human devotion to God has confused some believers in a way that blessings are creating divisions, as human beings can neither be satisfied with their portion nor can they receive an equitable measure of wealth simultaneously. This disparity can lead to envy, jealousy, and strife within the community of simple believers, undermining the unity that God desires for His people.
*Neglecting the Vulnerable:*
When we are favoured with wealth, it’s tempting to overlook the needs of the less fortunate to satisfy our extra pleasures. Failing to share blessings can result in a lack of compassion and a failure to live out the command to love one’s neighbour.
*Overconfidence in Security:*
The assurance of safety (Ezekiel 34:28) can lead to neglect of the downtrodden and overconfidence in personal ingenuity, causing individuals to let down their guard against spiritual attacks. This complacency can make them vulnerable to temptation and sin.
*Crisis of Faith:*
When blessings are perceived as conditional, believers may struggle with their faith during trials or when blessings are not apparent. This challenge can lead to doubt and abandonment, as believers may equate God’s favour solely with material or visible blessings.

We must prioritise God’s kingdom in our lives. When we align ourselves with His will, blessings will follow.

Our inner spirit being is exceedingly more powerful than our physical strength or ability. Difficult cases call for dedicated fasting: crucifying the flesh to empower our inner spirit being. Prayer and fasting deepen our relationship with God and empower us to overcome challenges.
