🕊️ *LENTEN DEVOTION – DAY 9* 🕊️
💎 *Thursday (Compassion and generous almsgiving).* 💎
💔 *The Cry for Shalom: Security and Mercy in a Troubled Nation* 💔
Today, we address a grave reality shaping Nigeria’s common life: violence from kidnappers and insurgents that terrorise communities, steal children from schools, kill the innocent, and extort families through abductions and ransom. Lent invites us to press into compassionate action that meets both spiritual need and tangible safety. In Luke 6:38 (NKJV), Jesus teaches generosity that blesses others: *_“Give, and it will be given to you.”_* Yet mercy without wisdom can leave people exposed; mercy joined with courageous justice becomes a life-giving witness to God’s kingdom where the vulnerable are protected, and the strong are held to account.
A friend reported his experience at a rural market where traders have been under ransom threat from armed criminal bandits, who demand *_“protection money”_* for a long while. If the amiable Northern Nigerian communities respond with charitable support for the vulnerable, strategic security measures, and prayerful advocacy for *_just governance_*, the climate of fear can begin to lift. Generosity, in this light, includes supporting families affected by violence, funding community security initiatives, and praying for leaders who will implement effective safety measures while upholding human dignity.
*Reflection:* How does Lent invite us to respond to a nation under threat? The impulse to give must be coupled with practical discernment—support for security initiatives, aid for victims, and prayers for wise policy. True almsgiving in this moment may include funding safe programmes for children’s education, emergency relief for affected families, and partnerships with churches and NGOs to promote peace, reconciliation, and the rule of law.
*Today’s practice invites us to consider:* what can I responsibly give to help build safer communities—financial contributions, time, or networks of prayer and advocacy? As we fast, let our generosity rise as a shield for the vulnerable and a catalyst for systemic reform. The God who called us to *_“bear one another’s burdens”_* (Galatians 6:2 NKJV) also calls us to bear burdens in ways that restore justice and security to all.
🙏 *LITURGICAL PRAYER* 🙏
*_O God of peace and protection_*, we lift Nigeria before You in this season of upheaval. Grant wisdom to our leaders, courage to our security forces, and discernment to the church as it speaks truth with love. May communities be safeguarded, markets remain open, schools and worship places be secure, and families experience shelter and healing. Stir in Your people a culture of practical mercy—food, shelter, medical aid, and protection for the vulnerable—without compromising the rule of law. Amen. *(Psalm 4:8; Proverbs 2:6-8)* NKJV.
*Prayer for security and justice:* Lord, raise up protectors of the weak, reformers of corrupt systems, and ambassadors of reconciliation. May justice roll on like a river, and may peace be the enduring outcome of Your grace at work in our land. Amen. *(Isaiah 1:17; Amos 5:24 NKJV)*
*Intercession for those harmed by violence:* Comfort families who have suffered loss; heal the wounded; restore hope to children and communities that have faced terror. Amen. *(Psalm 34:18; Psalm 147:3 NKJV)*
*Closing blessing:* May the God of all grace grant safety, mercy, and renewed strength to our nation, and may our lives reflect the healing power of Christ amid hardship. Amen. *2 Thessalonians 3:16-18* NKJV.
🕊️ *_“The Lord is a refuge for the persecuted, a stronghold in times of trouble.”_ – Psalm 9:9* (NKJV) 🕊️
