๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ *LENTEN DEVOTION โ€“ DAY 8* ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

*Wednesday (Repentance and renewal of the heart)*

๐Ÿ’” *The Cleansing of the Inner Man* ๐Ÿ’”

*_Repentance is not_* a single moment of regret; it is the continuous turning of the heart back to Godโ€”a spiritual reorientation that acknowledges our brokenness and opens us to divine transformation. In Psalm 51:10-12 (NKJV), King David, broken by sin yet drawn by grace, cries out: *_“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”_* This prayer reveals the essence of biblical repentance: not superficial remorse, but deep inner renovation by the Spirit of God.

A pastor friend once shared the testimony of a church elder who, after years of leading worship and serving faithfully, realised he had been harbouring an unforgiveness toward a family member. The bitterness had become so familiar he no longer recognised it as sin. During a Lenten season, through earnest prayer and meditation on Psalm 51, the Holy Spirit convicted him. His confession and reconciliation with that family member brought personal healing, open doors of Finance and renewed spiritual vitality in his leadership. It became clear that his joy of salvation has become restored, and his ministry became more authentic and powerful.

*Reflection:* What areas of my life have I allowed to harden by disposition into familiar patterns of sin or compromise? Where has my heart grown cold, distant from God’s presence due to being disappointed in a person or another, or resistant to the Spirit’s gentle correction? Lent invites us beyond external observances into the hidden chambers of the heart, where only God’s searching gaze can penetrate. True repentance begins when we stop justifying ourselves and start crying out like David: *_“Create in me a clean heart, O God.”_*

*Prayerful practice for today:* Engage deeply with Psalm 51โ€”read it slowly, pray it aloud, and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal areas needing cleansing. Itโ€™s Bishop Dr Femi-Adebanjoโ€™s winning style, adding a symbolic washing of hands (with white bar soap, salt and Shea Butter –Vitellaria paradoxa) while praying for purity of action; or lighting a candle while asking God to illuminate the dark corners of your heart. If your tradition practices *_Confession_*, make use of this sacred means of grace: Let no โ€œholier-than-thouโ€ human being condemn you with stories about ways and means! Journal about the specific sins or patterns God reveals, confess them honestly, and receive His forgiveness with gratitude. *_“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”_* (1 John 1:9 NKJV).

๐Ÿ™ *LITURGICAL PRAYER* ๐Ÿ™

*_O God of mercy and compassion,_* You do not desire the death of a sinner but that all should turn and live. I come before You today with King David’s ancient prayer upon my lips: *_Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me._* Search me, O Lord, and know my anxious thoughts; see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me by Your righteous Spirit. By Your grace, transform my heart from stone to flesh, that I may love You with undivided devotion and serve You with renewed passion, in Jesusโ€™ Name, Amen. *(Psalm 51:10-12; Psalm 139:23-24; Ezekiel 36:26 NKJV)*

*Prayer for integrity and authentic discipleship:* Lord, deliver me from hypocrisy and pretence. May my outward Christ-like observance flow from genuine inner transformation, not mere religiosity. In a society where corruption and compromise are commonplace, grant me the courage to live with clean hands and a pure heart. Let my repentance be real, my faith be sincere, and my witness be credible. Help me to model transparent accountability before You and before others. Amen. *(Psalm 24:3-4; James 4:8; 1 Timothy 1:5 NKJV)*

*Intercession for Nigeria’s moral and spiritual renewal:* Father, we cry out for our nation in this season of testing and transition. Make us stop passing judgment on all our leaders and seek mercy for them, since we have no saint anywhere who will lead us as Christ Jesus would! Just as You called Israel to return to You with all their hearts, so we plead for a national awakening in Nigeria. Convict leaders of hidden corruption; soften hearts hardened by greed, fake religiosity and tribalism; break the cycles of ungodliness, injustice, banditry, blood-letting, violence and criminality spewing from both the powerful and the downtrodden. Pour out Your Spirit of repentance upon our churches, mosques and shrines, that we may lead the way in confession, restitution, and transformation. Raise up prophetic voices that will call the people back to righteousness. May Nigeria experience true revivalโ€”not mere religious fundamentalism, but genuine heart change that produces justice, mercy, and humble walking with our God. Amen. *(2 Chronicles 7:14; Joel 2:12-13; Micah 6:8 NKJV)*

*Closing blessing:* In Jesusโ€™ Name, may God cleanse your heart, renew your spirit, and restore the joy of His salvation through you. Let the Power of the Holy Spirit cause you to walk in His presence with confidence, upheld by His generous Spirit, all the days of your life. Amen.

*(Psalm 51:10-12; Hebrews 10:22 NKJV)*
