🕊️ *LENTEN DEVOTION – DAY 7* 🕊️
*_Tuesday (Fasting as dependence on God)_*
💔 *The Discipline of Dependence.* 💔
Fasting is not primarily about abstaining from food; it is about feasting on God—learning to lean on Him as the source of life rather than on the quick comforts of this world. In Isaiah 58:6-9 (NKJV), God defines the true fast: loose the chains of injustice, set the oppressed free, share bread with the hungry, and honour the Sabbath in spirit. When we fast with a heart aligned to love, the Spirit reshapes our desires and deepens our reliance on Christ.
My wife told me about one of her *_CGNM Women’s League_* members, a big trader at the main market who, during a season of price volatility and inflation, chose to forego a personal luxury to invest in the provision of support for known lower income earners within the community, disbursing the welfare materials as if it was the Church’s idea. Such fasting looks like a sacrifice that blesses others and breaks the grip of privileged consumerism. It demonstrates that true nourishment comes from God’s provision and not from the next accumulation of profits.
*Reflection:* What is my current dependence—on food, on comfort, on status, or on Christ? Lent invites us to reorder those affections, so that Christ becomes the first and final reference point for every choice. When hunger presses in, do I turn to God in prayer after sharing my meals with those who need it more than I do, or do I move to the familiar eatery away from home, telling my conscience that God understands? The Spirit’s work in Lent is to redirect longing toward righteousness, justice, and mercy.
*Our prayerful practice for today* legitimises practical acts that articulate our dependence on God—developing more interest in reading longer biblical texts that we often skip due to challenges of each day; structured fasting; extended prayer; and acts of generosity that silently meet real needs. Let fasting become a school of obedience, teaching us to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God *(Matthew 4:4 NKJV).*
🙏 *LITURGICAL PRAYER* 🙏
*_O God of provision and grace,_* You supply our daily bread and far more: the bread of life. As I fast today, may my hunger awaken a deeper hunger for You. Break my reliance on what I can secure, and anchor my soul in Your unfailing promises. Teach me to cheerfully share and to serve, so that my fasting becomes a conduit of Your mercy to others in Africa and beyond. Let the discipline of fasting refine my desires, align my heart with Your will, and expand my compassion for the vulnerable. Amen. *(Isaiah 58:6-9; Matthew 4:4* NKJV)
*Prayer for disciplined living and social integrity:* LORD, grant me self-control in the areas of appetite, sparse time for God, and constant distraction. Help me to model restraint in a nation navigating political reform and social change. May my life testify to honest worship expressed in concrete acts of justice and mercy, in Jesus’ Name, Amen. *(Galatians 5:22-23; 1 Corinthians 10:31* NKJV)
*Intercession for Nigeria in the season of reform:* Father, we lift Nigeria’s governance and civic life before Your throne. Protect the integrity of her elections, equip leaders to serve with humility, and empower communities to pursue transparency and accountability. May the weak be defended, and may righteousness roll on like a river, in Jesus’ Name, Amen. *(Proverbs 11:3; Isaiah 1:17* NKJV)
*Closing blessing:* May your strength be renewed as you lean on the Lord; may your fasting deepen your faith, hope, and love, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
*(Isaiah 40:31; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NKJV)*
