🕊️ LENTEN DEVOTION – DAY 18 🕊
💎 Saturday of the Third Week of Lent. 💎
💔 The Unfailing Faithfulness of God 💔
On this Saturday in Lent, we pause to reflect on a truth that sustains us through every season of life: the faithfulness of God. In Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV), the prophet Jeremiah writes: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” These words were written amid profound suffering and national calamity, yet they carry a hope that refuses to be extinguished. God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our circumstances; it is rooted in His unchanging character.
Deuteronomy 7:9 (NKJV) declares: “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” This is not a promise for one generation, or one nation, or one moment in history. It is a covenant that stretches across time, binding together the testimonies of our grandparents, the struggles of our parents, and the hopes of our children. God’s faithfulness is the thread that weaves through the fabric of our lives, holding us together even when everything around us seems to be falling apart.
Consider the elderly woman who has lived through war, famine, and loss, yet still rises every morning to give thanks to God. Her wrinkled hands have worked on the soil, her feet have walked through fire, and her eyes have seen both sorrow and joy—but her testimony remains the same: “The Lord has been faithful.” She does not speak from ignorance of hardship; she speaks from the depth of experience. She has seen God provide when there was no way, heal when there was no medicine, and restore what was thought to be lost forever.
Lent calls us to remember. It calls us to look back at the faithfulness of God in our own lives and in the lives of those who have gone before us. When we feel weary, discouraged, or overwhelmed by the challenges of today, we can draw strength from the testimonies of yesterday. God has been faithful to our ancestors, and He will be faithful to us. His mercies are new every morning—not because we deserve them, but because He is who He is.
Let us pray that God would renew our hearts to trust in His unchanging faithfulness. May we learn to remember His works, to recount His mercies, and to testify to the next generation that the Lord is good; His love endures forever, and His faithfulness reaches the skies.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV) reminds us: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” May this truth anchor our souls—from generation to generation, from sunrise to sunset, in Nigeria and beyond—as a testimony to the world that our God is faithful.
🙏 LITURGICAL PRAYER 🙏
O faithful God of covenant and mercy, whose promises endure from generation to generation, I come to You on this Sabbath day with a heart full of gratitude. Thank You for Your faithfulness in my life, in the lives of my parents and grandparents, and in the life of our nation. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Your goodness, questioned Your timing, or forgotten Your mercies – especially, not allowing our nation to be consumed by the scourge of political scavengers that aimed to grab power without considering how the citizens will heave a sigh of relief. Today, I choose to remember. I choose to testify that You have been faithful, You are kind to us even when we became a rebellious house, and You will be faithful forever. Renew my trust in You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
Prayer for remembrance and trust in God’s covenant faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23; Deuteronomy 7:9): Father, help me to remember Your works and to recount Your mercies. When I am tempted to despair, remind me of the times You have provided, protected, and restored. May families across Nigeria and the rest of Africa gather to share testimonies of Your faithfulness, passing down stories of Your goodness to the next generation. Strengthen our faith, deepen our trust, and give us the courage to believe that Your mercies are new every morning, no matter how dark the night has been.
Intercession for our nation: Lord, we lift Nigeria before You—our history, our struggles, and our hopes. You have brought us through colonialism, civil war, and countless challenges. You have been faithful to our nation, and we ask that You continue to guide us. Heal the wounds of the past, unite us in the present, removing marginalisation and deep-rooted schism of tribalism. Give us a vision for the future. Raise up leaders who remember Your faithfulness and govern with integrity, humility, and love. Amen. (Psalm 100:5; Isaiah 54:10)
Closing blessing: May the Lord’s faithfulness be our anchor, His mercies our hope, and His covenant our inheritance, today and always, in Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen. (Psalm 89:1-2)
