*WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE?!*
Title: *Who Is on the Lord’s Side?*
Category: *Consecration*
Subcategory: *Fighting with the Lord*
Lyrics: *Frances Ridley Havergal* (1836-1879).
Music: *German melody*
Key: *Bb Major*
Meter: *6.5.6.5.D. with chorus*
Year of publication: *1877*
*1.*
Who is on the Lord’s side?
Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers,
Other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side?
Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side?
Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side
Saviour, we are Thine!
*2.*
Jesus, Thou hast bought us,
Not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own lifeblood,
For Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling
Each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing,
Thou hast made us free.
By Thy grand redemption,
By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side
Saviour, we are Thine!
*3.*
Fierce may be the conflict,
Strong may be the foe,
But the King’s own army
None can overthrow;
’Round His standard ranging,
Victory is secure,
For His truth unchanging
Makes the triumph sure.
Joyfully enlisting,
By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side
Saviour, we are Thine!
*4.*
Chosen to be soldiers,
In an alien land,
Chosen, called, and faithful,
For our Captain’s band;
In the service royal,
Let us not grow cold,
Let us be right loyal,
Noble, true and bold.
Master, wilt Thou keep us,
By Thy grace divine,
Always on the Lord’s side
Saviour, always Thine!
*ABOUT THE HYMN AND ITS AUTHOR!*
Havergal, Frances Ridley, was born on Dec. 14, 1836. In August 1850, she entered Mrs. Teed’s school, whose influence over her was most beneficial.
A short sojourn in Germany followed, and on her return, she was confirmed in Worcester Cathedral.
She took ill in 1879 and her illness took a sudden turn for the worse. The vicar hurried to her bedside. ‘Is Jesus with you now?’ he asked. ‘Of course he is!’ was the reply; ‘it is splendid! I thought He would have left me here a long while; but He is so good to take me now. Oh, I want all of you to speak bright, BRIGHT words about Jesus, oh, do, do! It is all perfect peace. I am only waiting for Jesus to take me in.’
She sank back, folded her hands on her breast and said:
‘There, now it’s all over. Blessed rest!’ Those present said that her death was almost a visible meeting with her King. Her countenance lit up as if she were already talking to Him, a glorious radiance on her beautiful face. She died on the 3rd day of June 1879, aged 43.
Miss Havergal by her distinct individuality carved out a niche which she alone could fill. Simply and sweetly she sang the love of God, and His way of salvation. And for this object, her whole life and all her powers were consecrated.
She still lives and speaks in every line of this hymn. Her hymn is permeated with the fragrance of her passionate love of Jesus.
Her religious views and theological bias are distinctly set forth in this hymn.
The burden of her writings is *_a free and full salvation,_* through the Redeemer’s merits, for every sinner who will receive it. And her life was devoted to the proclamation of this truth by personal labours, literary efforts, and earnest interest in Foreign Missions.
The hymn is related to the story of Moses when he returned and found the people sinning, Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Let him come unto me.” (Exodus 32:26).
In Matthew 12:30 Jesus said, “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathers not with me scatters abroad.” And so today we too need to make the decision. Will we say “Saviour, we are Yours!”?
Think about that question and the implications of your answer as you consider the words of this hymn.

🍇❤🦅 *SERMON THEME:*
*WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE?!*
🍇❤ *SERMON TEXT:* ❤🔥🍇
*Exodus 32:26* (NKJV).
*_“Then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, ‘Whoever is on the LORD’s side—come to me!’ And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.”_*
*Supporting Texts:*
– *Matthew 12:30* (NKJV): *_“He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”_*
– *1 Kings 18:21* (NKJV): *_“And Elijah came to all the people, and said, ‘How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people answered him not a word.”_*
– *Revelation 3:16* (NKJV): *_“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”_*
In 1943, during the height of World War II, a young German pastor named Dietrich Bonhoeffer faced the ultimate question: “Who is on the Lord’s side?” Hitler’s regime demanded absolute loyalty, but Bonhoeffer knew that true allegiance belonged to Christ alone. The philosophy behind that war was wrong! When pressured to support the Nazi ideology or remain silent, he declared, “We must obey God rather than men.” His choice cost him his life, but his legacy echoes through eternity.
Like Moses at the golden calf incident, Bonhoeffer drew a line in the sand. There was no middle ground—either you stood with God’s truth or you compromised with evil. His final words before execution were prophetic: “This is the end—but for me, the beginning of life.”
Today, beloved, the same question confronts every soul: In a world of moral relativism and spiritual compromise, whose side will you choose? The choice you make will determine, not just your earthly destiny but, your eternal inheritance.
Beloved congregation, we find ourselves at Mount Sinai witnessing one of history’s most dramatic moments of spiritual crisis. Moses had been on the mountain for forty days receiving God’s commandments, and the people grew restless. In their impatience, they demanded Aaron make them a golden calf—an idol to worship in place of the living God who had just delivered them from Egyptian bondage. Just like being under even a genuine Governmental Reforms regime, most of the loud respondents are never patient or trusting!
Picture this scene: The very people who had witnessed the parting of the Red Sea, who had seen God’s pillar of fire by night and cloud by day, who had eaten manna from heaven—these same people were now bowing before a piece of melted jewellery! They were singing, dancing, and offering sacrifices to a god they had created with their own hands.
This wasn’t merely a lapse in judgement, my dear friends; this was spiritual adultery of the highest order. They had broken the very first commandment before the tablets were even delivered: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” The situation was dire—God’s chosen people had chosen another master.
When Moses descended and saw this abomination, his righteous anger burned like fire. He cast down the tablets, ground the golden calf to powder, scattered it on water, and made the people drink it. *_But the crisis demanded more than symbolic action—it required a decisive choice._*
The complication was profound: How do you restore order when the people of God have compromised their covenant? How do you deal with spiritual rebellion amongst those called to be holy? The golden calf represented more than idolatry—it symbolised the human tendency to create God in our own image rather than being transformed into His image.
Moses understood that this was not merely a disciplinary issue but *_an identity crisis._* The question wasn’t just about punishment; it was about loyalty, allegiance, and spiritual DNA. Who would stand with the Lord when it cost them something? Who would choose God’s side when it meant confronting personal realisms, friends, family, and popular opinion?
The complication deepened because this wasn’t about external enemies attacking Israel—this was internal compromise threatening to destroy them from within. The golden calf spirit represents every generation’s tendency to dilute God’s truth, to make Him more palatable, more convenient, more suited to our desires rather than His holiness.
Furthermore, the people were caught between two worlds: the wilderness of God’s testing and the familiar bondage of Egypt’s relative comfort. They wanted God’s blessings without God’s lordship, His provision without His principles, His miracles without His moral demands.
The complication intensified because compromise is contagious. When Aaron, the high priest himself, yielded to popular pressure, it gave divine sanction to spiritual rebellion. Leadership failure creates a domino effect—when those called to uphold God’s standards begin to bend them, confusion spreads like wildfire throughout the congregation.
But the greatest complication was this: God Himself was ready to consume them all and start afresh with Moses alone. The very existence of the nation hung in the balance. Moses found himself interceding for a people who had rejected the God he represented. This is the ultimate test of spiritual leadership—standing in the gap for those who have turned their backs on heaven.
But the resolution remain that Moses, that mighty man of God, understood that crisis demands decisive action. He didn’t call a committee meeting or conduct a survey—he drew a line in the sand and thundered those immortal words: “Whoever is on the LORD’s side—come to me!”
This wasn’t a suggestion or an invitation to dialogue—this was a call to commitment that would separate the wheat from the chaff, the genuine from the counterfeit, the devoted from the divided.
The resolution came through radical alignment. The sons of Levi responded immediately, leaving their tents, their comfort zones, their family connections, and their tribal loyalties to stand with Moses. They understood that when God’s honour is at stake, there can be no neutrality, no fence-sitting, no diplomatic middle ground.
What followed was severe but necessary: those who had chosen the Lord’s side had to execute judgement upon those who persisted in rebellion. It cost them—some had to choose God over blood relatives. But their decisive action saved the nation and established them as God’s priestly tribe forever.
The resolution wasn’t just about punishment—it was about purification. When the dust settled, Israel knew beyond doubt that the Lord alone was their God, that His standards were non-negotiable, and that serving Him required total commitment, not partial allegiance.
Most importantly, Moses’ intercession and the Levites’ loyalty demonstrated that God always preserves a remnant—those who will stand for Him regardless of popular opinion, personal cost, or social pressure. Through their faithfulness, the entire nation was spared and the covenant was renewed.
*Let us apply God’s message today to real life category of people:*
- *The Penitent, Troubled Soul Seeking Christ’s Touch*
Is your soul troubled, Dear friend? Perhaps you’ve been dancing around your own golden calf—addictions that promise freedom but deliver bondage and over-dependence; relationships that offer love but demand compromise; and ambitions that glitter like gold but leave you spiritually bankrupt. Today, Christ stands before you asking, “Who is on My side?”
*Isaiah 1:18* (NKJV) declares: *_“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”_*
Your past failures do not disqualify you—they position you for God’s greatest grace. Come to Jesus’ side today, where mercy triumphs over judgement and love conquers every sin.
- *The Atheistic Person*
To you who deny God’s righteousness or existence, who is any mortal to judge you? Friend, just listen to me: Understand that neutrality is impossible in spiritual matters. Your very denial means you have taken a side—the side that says human reason is supreme, that matter is all that matters, that this life is all there is.
*Romans 1:20* (NKJV) challenges: *_“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”_*
The same God who revealed Himself at Sinai still reveals Himself today through creation, conscience, and Christ. Your intellectual honesty demands investigation, not dismissal: This brings no controversy. I just want to bring it to you what Proverbs 3:5-6 states: *_“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”._* This passage is often cited as a core teaching on trusting God and relying on His wisdom over one’s own *limited* understanding.
iii. *The Multi-Faith Community*
Dear Friends from various faith backgrounds, the question isn’t whether you’re religious—it’s whether you’re on the side of the one true God who revealed Himself definitively in Jesus Christ. Many paths may lead up a mountain, but only one way leads to the summit of eternal truth.
*John 14:6* (NKJV) records Jesus saying:
*_“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”_*
*_This isn’t religious arrogance—it’s a divine revelation._* Christ doesn’t diminish your sincerity: He fulfils your spiritual longing. Today, He invites you to move from religious tradition to personal transformation, from faith in what your sense determines as correct—to relying on the one who had passed through your travails but relied on God before you, and from ritual observance to relational intimacy with the living God.
- *The Everyday People*
To the ordinary believers struggling with ordinary temptations—the office worker facing ethical dilemmas, the intellectual armed by rights and reasoning to find faults in the living God’s existential truth, the parent balancing worldly success with godly principles, the student choosing between popular acceptance and Christian witness—Moses’ question echoes in your daily decisions.
*1 Corinthians 10:31* (NKJV) instructs: *_“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”_*
Every choice is a vote for whose side you’re on. Every conversation, every business transaction, every relationship reflects your ultimate allegiance. You don’t need a burning bush to hear God’s call—He speaks through His Word, His Spirit, and your circumstances daily. Let the agnostic minds calm their complex thoughts and study the engrafted word of God with positivity: those who trust God will receive the genuine peace!
- *The Business Organisation in Economic Logjam*
Corporate leaders facing financial pressures, understand that ethical compromise for economic survival is spiritual suicide. When market forces demand that you choose between profit and principle, *_remember—God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and the wealth in every mine._*
*Proverbs 11:1* (NKJV) declares: *_“Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.”_*
Businesses built on God’s principles may face temporary challenges but always enjoy eternal blessings. Choose integrity over immediate profit, fairness over financial manipulation, truth over tactical advantage. God’s side leads to sustainable success.
- *Revered Ecclesiastical Leaders*
My fellow servants of the Most High, we who wear the mantle of spiritual leadership face the gravest responsibility. Like Aaron, we can either stand for God’s unchanging truth or bend to congregational pressure for convenience.
*Ezekiel 3:17-18* (NKJV) warns: *_“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning… his blood I will require at your hand.”_*
We must preach the whole counsel of God—not just the comfortable verses but the convicting ones, not just grace but also holiness, not just love but also judgement. Our pulpits must be prophetic platforms, not popularity contests.
vii. *Leaders of Every Tier of Government*
To you in positions of governmental authority, understand that your power is delegated from heaven. Whether you serve in the executive, judiciary or in one of the local councils, State Houses of Assembly or the National Assembly, your decisions affect not just policy but people’s souls. When those who trust God suffer, your accountability is divinely weighed! You may be voted in by the electorates but without God’s will you cannot be in authority to lead the people!
*Romans 13:18* reminds us: *_“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”_* NKJV.
When laws contradict God’s laws, when policies promote what God prohibits, when politics become narcissistic wars and self-serving while demanding that you compromise biblical principles—remember Daniel’s courage, remember the Hebrew boys’ conviction. *_Choose God’s approval over public applause._*
*CHALLENGE FOR US TO REDEDICATE OUR LIVES TO CHRIST – NOT RELIGION*
This isn’t about joining a denomination or being under any indoctrination, following a tradition, or maintaining religious respectability. This is about forgetting skewed stories while embracing the radical, total, uncompromising commitment to Jesus Christ as your Lord, Saviour, and King!
Too many have settled for religious activity or logical consciousness without spiritual authenticity, church membership without Christ’s lordship, theological knowledge without transformational power. *_But today, the Holy Spirit is drawing a line in the sand of your soul._*
Are you tired of lukewarm Christianity that neither satisfies your heart nor changes your character? Are you weary of playing religious games while your soul yearns for genuine encounter with the living God? Are you ready to stop dancing around your golden calves, now bowing only before the King of Kings—the maker of your soul?
Christ doesn’t want your Friday, Sabbath or Sunday performance—He wants your daily surrender. He doesn’t desire your religious rhetoric—He demands your revolutionary commitment. He isn’t impressed by your church or worship attendance—He’s interested in your complete allegiance, which has nothing to do with religion.
Today, I challenge every soul in this sanctuary—reading from engrafted lines or hearing my humble voice: Stop playing church and start following Christ! Stop being a cultural Christian and become a committed disciple! Stop seeking God’s blessings while avoiding God’s lordship!
The cross wasn’t just about forgiveness—it was about transformation. The resurrection wasn’t just about life after death—it’s about life before death being radically changed. The Holy Spirit wasn’t given just for comfort—He was given for courage to live completely for God.
If you’re tired of spiritual mediocrity, if you’re hungry for authentic relationship with Jesus, if you’re ready to burn your bridges to the world and build your life on Christ alone—then stand up right now and declare with Moses and the Levites: *_“I am on the Lord’s side!”_*
This decision will cost you something—perhaps friends who don’t understand, family members who oppose your commitment, opportunities that require compromise. But what you gain infinitely outweighs what you lose: peace that passes understanding, joy unspeakable and full of glory, purpose that transcends earthly success, and eternal inheritance that can never fade.

The altar is open, heaven is attentive, and Christ is waiting. Don’t harden your heart to His voice. Don’t quench the Spirit’s drawing. *_Come as you are, but don’t leave as you came!_*
*_“Choose you this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”_* (Joshua 24:15, NKJV).
Beloved congregation, as we conclude this divine encounter, let the echoes of Moses’ ancient question resonate in your spirit throughout this week: “Who is on the LORD’s side?!”
We have journeyed together from the golden calf to the foot of the cross, from Israel’s rebellion to our own need for redemption, from ancient Sinai to modern sanctuaries. The message remains unchanging: God demands total allegiance, complete commitment, and undivided devotion.
In a world that worships at the altars of materialism, separatist activism, relativism, and humanism—where tolerance is the highest virtue and truth is considered subjective—the church for whom Jesus Christ died must sound the trumpet with a certain sound. We must be the generation that refuses to bow to contemporary golden calves, that stands for biblical truth regardless of cultural pressure, that chooses God’s approval over human applause.
The hymn writer Frances Ridley Havergal understood this when she penned those immortal words: *_“Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?”_* Her life was a living answer to her own question—complete surrender to Christ’s lordship, total commitment to His service, uncompromising devotion to His truth.
Like her, we must live with such clarity of purpose that when our earthly pilgrimage ends, we can echo her final words: *_“There, now it’s all over. Blessed rest!”_* knowing we fought the good fight, finished our course, and kept the faith.
Remember, dear saints: The choice you make today determines your destiny tomorrow. The side you choose in this life determines your place in eternity. The allegiance you declare now echoes throughout the corridors of heaven and hell.
*May the Lord Jesus Christ, who cross over compromise, who chose suffering over sin, who accepted the Father’s will over popular approval, strengthen you to make the same choice daily. May the Holy Spirit, who empowered the early church to turn the world upside down for Christ, anoint you with that same revolutionary fire.*
As you leave this sacred place, carry with you the conviction that neutrality is not an option in spiritual warfare. Every day presents fresh opportunities to declare whose side you’re on—through your words, your choices, your priorities, your relationships, and your lifestyle.
When the world asks you to bow to its gods of greed, when society pressures you to compromise biblical standards, when popular culture demands you embrace what God calls abomination—remember Moses’ clarion call and make your declaration: *_“I am on the LORD’s side!”_*
The battle lines are drawn, the trumpet has sounded, and Christ is calling His army to advance. Will you be found among the faithful few or the compromising crowd? Will you stand with the Levites who left everything to serve God, or with the multitude who danced around their golden idols?
The question that confronted Israel at Sinai, that challenged Elijah’s generation at Carmel, that faced the disciples at Calvary, now confronts you in this sanctuary: “Who is on the LORD’s side?!”
*_Your answer will echo through eternity. Choose wisely, choose boldly, choose Christ!_*
Let us go forth as burning and shining lights in this dark world, as salt that has not lost its savour, as a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. Let our lives be living testimonies that we have chosen the Lord’s side and will serve Him with gladness all our days.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Go in peace, go in power, go in His precious Name!
Amen and Amen!
*_“By Thy call of mercy, By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Saviour, we are Thine!”_*
We have just been served with our *GOOD NEWS!* 😇

*_May the Holy Lord supply our hearts with the most beneficial response to His call, so that we may accept our great destiny that must strengthen our faith, filling our soul with His divine meaning, and crowning us with eternal victory as we trust and live for_ “the GREAT I AM!” _Go forth in this your might and overcome the world, for victory is yours, in Jesus’ Name!_ AMEN!* ✨🙏💖
