ABOUT THE HYMN AND ITS AUTHOR!
Lyte, Henry Francis, was born on June 1, 1793, and educated at Portora (the Royal School of Enniskillen), and at Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated in 1814.
Lyre, who was always frail in health and was early left an orphan, entered Holy Orders in 1815.
In 1818, he underwent a significant spiritual change, which shaped and influenced the whole of his afterlife, the immediate cause being the illness and death of a brother clergyman.
Lyte says of him:— “He died happy under the belief that though he had deeply erred, there was One whose death and sufferings would atone for his delinquencies, and be accepted for all that he had incurred;”
And concerning himself, he adds:—
“I was greatly affected by the whole matter and brought to look at life and its issues with a different eye than before; and I began to study my Bible, and preach in another manner than I had previously done.”
He died on Nov. 20, 1847.
His Poems were published in 1846.
“Pleasant are Thy courts above” was published in the Spirit of the Psalm 84: 10, in 1834. It was published in 4 stanzas of 8 lines each.
The hymn beautifully dovetails with the theme of God dwelling among His people in reverent, worshipful spaces—heightening anticipation for His tangible presence in the temple described in 1 Kings 6.

*_Church, we must prepare our hearts before we can receive from God. The Lord says today: ‘I’m looking for a dwelling place!’ Are you ready to be His temple?_*
*_Prayer 1: Heart Purification_*
_“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”_ – Psalm 84:10 (NKJV).

👑🦅 *INTRODUCTION* 🍇💒
🌹 My Beloved Family, let me share something with you, which the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart this week. I was reading about Solomon’s temple, and suddenly the Lord whispered, *_‘This isn’t just ancient history—this is My blueprint for revival!’_* You see: God has always been in the “dwelling” business. He is not satisfied with remaining distant; He longs to come closer, to abide with His people.
I sense the Lord saying to someone here today: *_‘I’ve been knocking at the door of your heart, but you’ve been too busy to answer. Today, I want to make My dwelling in you!’_* Church, are you ready for a miraculous encounter?
I’ve been pastoring for about thirty-five years, and I’ve learned something profound: God is not interested in being a weekend guest in our lives. He is unsatisfied with welcoming us to Worship Places on Sundays and watching us live independently the rest of the week. No! Our God is in the dwelling business! He wants to move in permanently, to make His home in our hearts, families, churches, and nation!

🦅 *In His Holiness: God Dwells Here* 🌹
👑🦅 *SERMON TEXT* 🍇💒
🦅 *1 Kings 6:13, 22-29* (NKJV) 🌹
Turn with me, if you will, to 1 Kings chapter 6. This is not just ancient history, beloved—this is God’s blueprint for revival! Listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying:
*_“And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake My people—Israel.”_* – 1 Kings 6:13 (NKJV).
Do you hear the passion in God’s voice? *_“I WILL dwell!”_* Not “I might dwell” or “I could dwell”—but “I WILL dwell!” This is covenant language! This is divine determination!
*_“He overlaid the whole temple with gold until he finished the entire temple; also, he overlaid the entire altar by the inner sanctuary with gold.”_* – 1 Kings 6:22.
And then we see the cherubim:
*_“Then he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high. Five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits was the other wing of the cherub; from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other, there were ten cubits. And the other cherub was ten cubits; both were the same size and shape. The height of one cherub was ten cubits, and so was the height of the other cherub. Then he set the cherubim inside the inner room, and they stretched out the cherubim’s wings so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the other cherub’s wing touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. Also, he overlaid the cherubim with gold.”_* – 1 Kings 6:23-28.
Church, do you see the precision? Do you know the excellence? This is how God wants us to prepare for His dwelling!
👑🦅 *Now, listen to this:* 🍇💒
Picture a grand cathedral rising from dust, stones laid with prayer, gold leaf catching the first light of dawn, cherubim carved in silent vigil within the inner sanctuary. The people gather to admire architecture and encounter the Living God who chooses to dwell with His people. As the hymn softly leads their spirits—“Pleasant are Thy Courts Above”—the congregation senses that heaven touches earth where sincerity, purity, and obedience align with God’s blueprint. In 1 Kings 6, Solomon’s temple is not merely a building; it is a radiant invitation for God’s transcendent holiness to become present in the midst of human life. Revival begins when we prepare a dwelling where He can dwell.🌹
A few years ago, I was privileged to visit one of Europe’s most magnificent cathedrals. Walking through those massive doors, I was immediately struck by the attention to detail. Every stone had been carved precisely, every window crafted with care, and every piece of gold leaf was applied with reverence.
The morning light streamed through stained-glass windows, casting rainbow prisms across polished marble floors. But what struck me most wasn’t the building itself—it was the atmosphere. The very air seemed to whisper, *_“Holy.” * I instinctively removed my traditional African “dog-ear” fìlà (cap), leaving the red skull cap beneath, lowered my voice, and walked more softly.
As I stood in that sacred space, I heard our hymn echoing in my spirit: *_“Pleasant are thy courts above, in the land of light and love; pleasant are thy courts below, in this land of sin and woe.”_* And suddenly, the Lord spoke to my heart: *_‘This is what happens when My people prepare a dwelling place worthy of My presence!’_*
But here’s what the Holy Spirit showed me, beloved: It wasn’t the marble or the gold that made that place sacred. It was the centuries of prayers that had soaked into those walls, the tears of repentance that had fallen on those floors, the songs of worship that had risen from surrendered hearts. The building was beautiful, yes—but it was the presence of God that made it a sanctuary!
Church, God is looking for temples today—not made of stone and mortar, but of surrendered hearts and holy lives!
👑🦅 *Let us deeply consider Papa’s message to us:* 🍇💒
- *SITUATION: The Divine Longing to Dwell.*
Family of the Faithful, let me share something that will revolutionise your understanding of who God is. From the very beginning of time, our heavenly Father has had one burning, passionate desire—*to dwell with His children!*
Think about it! In the Garden of Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day before sin entered the picture. *_Can you imagine that? The Creator of the universe, strolling through His garden, enjoying intimate fellowship with the work of His hands. That wasn’t “duty” for God—that was delight!_*
But when sin shattered that fellowship, God’s heart broke. Not because His ego was wounded, but because His children were now separated from Him. And from that moment, every page of Scripture tells the story of God’s relentless pursuit to restore that dwelling relationship. When humans entered into trouble, they sought God *_through Religion._* But when love came down, God sought believers, *_in Christ-likeness!_*
“Religiosity will not make God dwell in mankind, true love, compassionate affection and genuine fellowship through Christ Jesus, HE FINDS US as a befitting dwelling place.” – Michael A. Fẹ́mi-Adébánjọ.
Listen to His hearty cry in Exodus: *_“And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them”_* – Exodus 25:8 (NKJV).
Can you hear the longing in His voice? *_‘Make Me a place! Prepare Me a dwelling! I want to come close again!’_*
When Moses built the tabernacle, God gave him specific instructions: *_“And see to it that you make them according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain”_* – Exodus 25:40 (NKJV). Why such precision? *Because God knows what kind of environment His holiness requires!*
Here we are in 1 Kings 6, and Solomon is building a permanent dwelling for God. Listen to the promise: *_“Concerning this temple which you are building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, and keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel”_* – 1 Kings 6:12 (NKJV).
I hear the Spirit saying today: *_“I’m still looking for dwelling places! I’m still seeking hearts that will welcome Me not as a guest, but as the permanent resident of their lives!”_*
- *COMPLICATION: When Worship Becomes Routine.*
But here’s where we run into trouble, beloved. Human beings have this dangerous tendency to become familiar with the sacred. We start treating the holy as common, the extraordinary as ordinary.
Solomon built this magnificent temple. *_“So, Solomon built the temple and finished it”_* – 1 Kings 6:14 (NKJV). The construction was complete, and gold was in place: *_“The whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple”_* – 1 Kings 6:22 (NKJV).
From a human perspective, everything looked perfect!
But I want to prophesy to someone here today: *_God is making you a sanctified Temple for His Worship, today, in Jesus’ Mighty Name!_*
Why? Having a beautiful building doesn’t guarantee God’s presence, having the correct doctrine doesn’t ensure a divine encounter, and having traditional Judaist rituals doesn’t produce a revival fire!
*You see, the danger is this: we can have all the external trappings of worship—the music, the liturgy, the programmes, the activities—but miss the very presence of God we’re trying to attract! We can become so focused on the performance that we forget the Person we’re performing for!*
I’ve been in churches that were architecturally stunning but spiritually sterile and senile. I’ve witnessed services flawlessly executed but completely devoid of divine power. *Beautiful buildings, perfect programmes, but where was God? Where was His manifest presence?*
The prophet Isaiah warned about this: *_“These people draw near with their mouths and honour Me with their lips but have removed their hearts far from Me”_* – Isaiah 29:13 (NKJV).
*Church, it’s possible to go through all the motions of worship whilst our hearts are a thousand miles away from God!*
*And here’s what breaks my heart—when we settle for form without fire, for routine without relationship, for religion without revival, we rob ourselves of the very thing our souls are crying out for: the manifest presence of the Living God!*
I sense the Lord saying to someone today: *_‘You’ve been coming to My house for years, but you’ve never truly invited Me into your heart. You’ve been singing the songs, but never surrendered your soul. You’ve been going through the motions but missed the miracle!’_*
iii. *RESOLUTION: When Heaven Touches Earth.*
*But PRAISE GOD, there’s hope! When we align our worship with God’s pattern, prepare our hearts with His holiness, and approach Him not as casual visitors but as consecrated vessels—that’s when heaven touches the earth!*
Look at what happened when Solomon got it right. The cherubim were NOT just decorative—they were declarations! *_“Then he set the cherubim inside the inner room; and they stretched out the cherubim’s wings so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the other cherub’s wing touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. Also, he overlaid the cherubim with gold”_* – 1 Kings 6:27-28.
*Do you see the symbolism?* The cherubim’s wings formed a canopy, a covering, a sacred space where heaven and earth could meet! And when they overlaid them with gold, they were saying, *“Nothing but the finest for our King! Nothing but excellence for our God!”*
And what was God’s response? *_“And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake My people Israel”_* – 1 Kings 6:13 (NKJV).
When they prepared the dwelling place according to His pattern, He came down and made Himself feel at home!
Church, revival isn’t a mysterious thing that happens randomly. *Revival is what occurs when God’s people prepare their hearts, their homes, their churches, and their communities to be dwelling places for His glory!*
The apostle Paul understood this principle. He declared: *_“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”_* – 1 Corinthians 3:16 (NKJV).
*We don’t need to build a temple whenever we need to adore the Almighty God—we are the temple! But the question remains: Have we prepared our hearts to be worthy dwelling places for the King of Glory?*
I prophesy to you today: when you make room for God in every area of your life—your thoughts, deeds, words, relationships, finances, dreams, and your fears—He will come and dwell with power that will transform not only you but everyone around you!
👑🦅 *How does this discourse affect us?* 🍇💒
Now, beloved, let me speak prophetically to different groups of people here today, because God has a word for each of us:
- *To the Penitent, Troubled Soul Seeking Christ’s Touch:*
My dear friend, I have good news for you if your heart is heavy, carrying shame, guilt, or brokenness today! *God doesn’t require you to clean up your life before you come to Him—He invites you to come as you are so that He can clean you up!*
Come boldly to the throne of grace through Jesus Christ; let His cleansing flow wash away your sins and restore your relationship with the Father.
In Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) the bible says: *_“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: The King of Glory beckons you to receive His forgiveness and to begin anew as His own dwelling place.
- *To my friend, the Atheistic Person:*
With love, I inform you that the temple of God begins in a life transformed by the Holy Spirit; the change in you whispers more than arguments—it testifies to God’s reality.
Here is a direct saying from 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NKJV)
*_“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: If you ask, *_“Is God real?”_* Behold the living transformation in lives that surrender to Him; the fragrance of His presence speaks louder than claims! Give your life to Christ and discover what I mean!
iii. *To the good Inter-Faith Community:*
Thank God you believe that your Creator exists! Beyond Religion, you must honour the sacred in truth-seeking, while affirming Christ as the Light who dwells with His people. This invites genuine encounter beyond religious labels.
Please hear, John 1:14 (NKJV) declares:
*_“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: The Spirit draws all to the truth that the living God inhabits the praises of His people, and that truth can meet every heart in humility and love.
- *To our Everyday People.*
Being simple is dangerous! Holiness in ordinary life must give way to daily tasks and make them acts of worship. Let your workplace, family, and friendships become living temples along with you.
Colossians 3:23-24 (NKJV) declares:
*_“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: In kitchens, classrooms, shops, and clinics, God desires to inhabit lives that honour Him in the small and the grand.
- *To the Business Organisation in Danger of Bankruptcy.*
I admonish us to build a culture of integrity and grace, knowing it is never too late to invite God’s presence to order strategy, operations, and ethics. Come, let Jesus revive the heartbeat of your enterprise under His governance.
Proverbs 16:3 (NKJV) asserts:
*_“Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: God’s dwelling among your people brings clarity, courage, and restoration; He orders steps from peril to provision.
- *To My Revered Ecclesiastic Leaders and Colleagues.*
Let us lead with holiness, modelling God’s dwelling in our leadership and governance of our followers. We are divinely admonished to shepherd God’s worshippers with transparency, humility, and courage. Just a little more effort is divinely demanded.
See 1 Peter 5:2-4 (NKJV)
I quote: *_“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly; not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: Your authenticity and prayerful dependence on God will attract His glory; the Church will rise when shepherds dwell in the presence of the Chief Shepherd.
vii. *To Leaders of every Tier of Government.*
Govern with a fear of the Lord; enact policies honouring truth, justice, and mercy; let our nation witness a people under God’s orders.
Romans 13:1-4 (NKJV) says, and I quote: *_“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”_*
– Prophetically spoken: When leaders honour the dwelling presence of God, blessings saturate the land; revival follows righteous governance.
👑🦅 *CHALLENGE* 🍇💒
Beloved, the Almighty God demands that you and I re-dedicate our lives—personally and collectively—to becoming living temples of the Holy Spirit, letting every area of our lives radiate the presence of the King of Glory rather than mere religious form.
Are you ready to invite the dwelling God to inhabit your heart, home, church, city, and nation today?
👑🦅 *SEVEN-FOLD PRAYER RAID* (INTERCESSION) 🍇💒
- *_No Worship No Rain!_*
*Zechariah 14:17* (NKJV) states: _“And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain”._ (parallels to temple worship and rain as blessing)
🦅 *Prayer: _By the Holy Spirit’s cleansing fire, O LORD, stir worship in the land and restore the rain of blessing as Your people seek You in true reverence, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
- *_Let us Love Your Temple Again!_*
Zechariah 14:7 (NKJV) states: _“It shall be one day Which is known to the LORD— Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light”._
🦅 *Prayer: _In Love, guide our land to a day when there is light in Your temple and Your glory covers the earth, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
III. *_Holiness is Standard!_*
Zechariah 14:9 (NKJV) states: _“And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be— “The LORD is one,” And His name one.”_
🦅 *Prayer: _Dear Papa God, establish the Lord’s Kingdom in every sphere; let Your holiness be the standard in leadership and life, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
- *_Let Our People Fear You, O LORD!_*
Isaiah 33:6 (NKJV) states: _“Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, And the strength of salvation; The fear of the Lord is His treasure.”_
🦅 *Prayer: _Let wisdom, righteousness, and stability be found in our days; let the fear of the Lord be our treasure, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
- *_Intercession for Our Nation!_*
*Joel 3:18* (NKJV) states:
_“And it will come to pass in that day that the mountains shall drip with new wine, the hills shall flow with milk, and all the brooks of Judah shall be flooded with water; A fountain shall flow from the house of the Lord and water the Valley of Acacias.”_
🦅 *Prayer: _Let the mountains drip with sweet wine of revival; let righteousness and justice be the foundation of our nation, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
- *_Zeal for the Unsaved!_*
*Habakkuk 2:14* (NKJV) states: _“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”_
🦅 *Prayer: _Let the knowledge of the glory of the Lord cover the earth as the waters cover the sea, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
VII. *_Prove Yourself Financially!_*
*Malachi 3:10* (NKJV) states: _“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,”_ says the Lord of hosts, _“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.”_
🙏🦅 *Prayer: *_We are tired of lacking because of stubbornness: Give your sheep the conviction always to bring tithes and offerings to Your Church and prove You as the source of our provision; Grant us our financial renewal, in Jesus’ Name._* 🔥
👑🦅 *ALTAR CALL.* 🍇💒
– *Call:* The One who dwells in Holiness invites souls to draw near—salvation, more profound commitment, rededication, and the financial release for dwelling with Him daily.
