🦅 Here is our Hymn: *_“THOU HIDDEN SOURCE OF CALM REPOSE” by_ Charles Wesley.* 💕

MHB. 98

1. Thou hidden source of calm repose,

Thou all-sufficient love divine,

My help and refuge from my foes,

Secure I am, if Thou art mine;

From sin and grief and shame I hide me,

Jesus, in Thy name.

2. Thy mighty name salvation is,

And keeps my happy soul above;

Comfort it brings, and pow’r and peace,

And joy and everlasting love;

To me, with Thy dear name, are giv’n

Pardon and holiness and heav’n.

3. Jesus, my all in all Thou art;

My rest in toil, my ease in pain,

The healing of my broken heart,

In war my peace; in loss my gain,

My smile beneath the tyrant’s frown,

In shame my glory and my crown.

4. In want my plentiful supply,

In weakness my almighty pow’r,

In bonds my perfect liberty,

My light in Satan’s darkest hour,

My help and stay whene’er call,

My life in death, my heav’n, my all.

The Hymn’s Author, Charles Wesley, the son of Samuel Wesley, was born at Epworth, England, on Dec. 18, 1707. He was educated at Westminster School and afterwards at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with an M.A. In 1735, he took Orders and immediately proceeded with his brother John Benjamin Wesley to Georgia, both employed as missionaries of the S.P.G. He returned to England in 1736. For many years, he engaged with his brother in preaching the Gospel. He died on March 29, 1788. Charles Wesley has been justly assigned the appellation of the *_“Bard (lyricist or poet) of Methodism.”_* His prominence in hymn writing may be judged from the fact that in the “Wesleyan Hymn Book,” 623 of the 770 hymns were written by him, and he published more than thirty poetical works, written either by himself alone or in conjunction with his brother. The number of his separate hymns is at least five thousand.

Our *THEME:*

💕*_THE WRITING ON THE WALL: When Heaven Interrupts Human Pride_* 💕

Beloved, this morning, we stand before one of Scripture’s most sobering accounts—a tale of divine judgment that echoes through the corridors of time into our very age. In Daniel chapter 5, we witness the dramatic fall of King Belshazzar, whose irreverent mockery of the sacred triggered Heaven’s immediate intervention. This is not merely ancient history; it is a mirror reflecting our contemporary world’s brazen disregard for the holy.

The King was throwing a party, but Heaven was poised to crush it. Belshazzar, ruler of Babylon—son and successor of the famous King Nebuchadnezzar—filled his palace with glitz, glamour, music, mouth-watering delicacies, exotic wine, and pride. A thousand nobles joined him under glittering chandeliers in his palace’s opulent auditorium. Laughter echoed off the walls as cups clinked, wine flowed, well-dressed men and gorgeous damsels chattered, and voices roared. Arrogance danced in the air like incense.

But this was not merely celebration; it was rebellion in royal robes against righteousness. In a bold act of defiance, Belshazzar gave a chilling command: *_“Bring out the golden chalices.”_*

These were no ordinary cups for merriment or trophies of lofty achievement. They were consecrated holy vessels—instruments of divine worship that his father had taken from the temple of the Most High God in Jerusalem. These were holy endowments once set apart for sacred worship of Yahweh, now reduced to party wares!

With brazen disregard for God, Belshazzar filled them with vintage wine. He lifted them high as a priest would—not in praise to the Holy God of Heaven, but in mockery. *_He toasted demonic idols made of gold, silver, brass, copper, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that could not see, hear, speak, help, or save._*

The guests rejoiced, celebrated, and revelled in praise of idols crafted through human ingenuity. But Heaven never overlooks sacrilege against His holiness!

Instantly, the mood shifted. No warning, no voices, no thunder. Just a single hand—a dismembered hand appeared, glowing and ghostly, hovering near the palace wall. As people stood stupefied, the hand began to write—silent strokes across the plaster near the lampstand. The hand of God interrupted human pride, and suddenly… the music stopped.

Laughter turned to gasps. Goblets fell, eyes widened as fear replaced vanity. Belshazzar turned pale. His legs wobbled. His knees knocked. His strength left him. This was no drunken illusion—this was divine reality! The writing burned on the wall, but no one could understand its message.

In desperation, Belshazzar summoned Babylon’s wisest men: magicians, enchanters, astrologers. They read but could not interpret. Earth’s wisdom failed!

Then someone remembered Daniel—old now, forgotten by most humans, pushed down from political power, but still recognised in Heaven! Daniel entered, calm and clear-eyed. He did not seek reward or flatter anyone. He looked into the King’s eyes and reminded him of truth, speaking of Nebuchadnezzar’s humbling until he learned to honour the Most High.

Daniel turned to Belshazzar and declared: *_“You knew all this, but you did not humble yourself. Instead, you set yourself against the Lord of Heaven.”_* Then Daniel read the writing: *_“MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.”_*

The chilling interpretation followed: *_“God has numbered your reign’s days and brought it to an end. You have been weighed and found wanting. Your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians!”_*

That same night, before sunrise, judgment fell. The Medo-Persian army invaded Babylon. The palace was overrun. Belshazzar was slain. The mighty Babylonian Empire fell. The hand of the Lord wrote judgment, and it came to pass!

Heaven’s Standards Remain Unchanged – This account transcends ancient history—it speaks directly to our generation!

The correlation between our TEXT: James 1:2-8, and our passage: Daniel 5:1-31 within the theme *_“The Writing on the Wall: When Heaven Interrupts Human Pride”_* can be understood theologically as a profound narrative of divine sovereignty, human pride, and the necessity of divine wisdom and humility.

*_Theological Correlation:_*

Divine Sovereignty and Human Pride:

Daniel 5 narrates the story of Belshazzar’s prideful arrogance in desecrating the sacred vessels and dishonouring God during his feast, culminating in the divine writing on the wall (“MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN”).

This divine act serves as a direct intervention—heaven’s writing on the wall—a divine judgment that interrupts human pride and arrogance.

James 1:2-8 emphasises that trials and testing are divine tools used to expose and refine faith, often revealing underlying pride, doubt, or double-mindedness. The testing of faith (trials) can serve as a form of divine interruption, exposing human frailty and pride, prompting humility and reliance on God’s wisdom.

Belshazzar did not care about the example that his father was. The silence of God at man’s abuse of privilege is a test to mankind. We must reverence God with fear and trembling!

The Call for Humility and Divine Wisdom:

In Daniel 5, the king’s pride and neglect of divine authority result in a divine warning and judgment. The writing on the wall is a divine rebuke—an interruption designed to lead to acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty. But Belshazzar did not remember God at his trial moment.

James encourages believers to ask God for wisdom, especially during trials that test faith. Such trials can be seen as opportunities for divine interruption, where human pride is humbled, and divine wisdom is sought. The believer’s response should be one of humility, faith, and dependence on God’s grace.

The Testing of Faith as a Divine Intervention:

James describes trials as *_a means to produce patience and spiritual maturity._*

These trials are divine interventions that challenge human self-sufficiency and pride—much like the divine handwriting on the wall served as an intervention in Daniel 5.

The *_“writing on the wall”_* symbolises God’s sovereign message—an urgent divine communication intended to awaken humans to their spiritual condition and their need to seek divine mercy in humility.

The Consequences of Pride and Double-Mindedness:

Daniel 5 illustrates the tragic consequences of pride, disrespect for divine authority, and moral failure.

James warns against double-mindedness and doubt, which lead to instability and hinder divine blessing. The faith that is unwavering, coupled with humility and the pursuit of divine wisdom, aligns with the biblical call to recognise God’s sovereignty and submit to His divine plan.

Bishop Dr Michael Femi-Adebanjo would conclude, theologically, that James 1:2-8 correlates with Daniel 5:1-31 by illustrating that divine interventions—trials, warnings, or judgments—serve to humble human pride and redirect the believer’s focus from self-reliance to divine reliance. Both passages underscore that heaven’s “writing on the wall” is an act of divine sovereignty meant to awaken humility, prompt repentance, and foster spiritual maturity through dependence on God’s wisdom and grace.
May this theological insight deepen your understanding and proclamation of the theme.

It must be noted that we inhabit a world that systematically mocks the sacred whilst rebuking ministers of God, in disobedience to His clear warning repeated more than once in the Bible: *_1 Chronicles 16:19-22_* and *_Psalm 105:12-15_* say exactly the same words:

19 When you were few in number, indeed very few, and strangers in it.
20 When they went from one nation to another, and from one kingdom to another people,
21 He permitted no man to do them wrong; yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes,
22 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm.”

We treat divine worship as mere entertainment or “religious scam.” Our society honours idols of fame, earthly possessions, and money over the God who gives breath of life and whatever we desire.

Like Belshazzar, we have grown impatient with God’s apparent silence, mistaking His forbearance for absence. We witness the sacred transformed into spectacle, His temple converted into auditoriums where jesting and vain words flourish unchecked. Yet Heaven still observes. God still weighs lives, and every act remains measured upon His eternal scales.

The writing may not appear upon our walls in glowing script, but divine truth continues speaking whilst we dismiss believers as ignorant or brainwashed.

Some regard spiritual realities as intellectual foolishness, but Scripture warns us clearly: *_“God will not be mocked”_* (Galatians 6:7).

We need not wonder how this divine message can be applied to our contemporary context.

*_To Government Leaders:_* Like Belshazzar, those in authority often forget that power originates from the Almighty God. When leaders enact policies that contradict divine principles, mock religious convictions, engage in corrupt practices, or treat sacred institutions with contempt, they invite Heaven’s judgment.

Political power without divine acknowledgment becomes mere human arrogance destined for divine interruption.

*_To the Atheist Individual:_* Your intellectual pride may scoff at “religious superstition,” but remember—Babylon’s wisest minds could not interpret God’s message. Human wisdom, however sophisticated, fails when confronted with divine reality. Don’t ask the rhetorical question of where God was when some bad leaders bears the rule. Your denial of God does not negate His existence; it merely positions you for surprise when His hand writes upon your wall.

*_To Business Enterprises and Firms:_* Corporate success built upon exploitation, dishonesty, or disregard for divine principles mirrors Belshazzar’s feast—impressive externally but rotten at its core. When businesses treat employees as mere resources, customers as prey, and profit as god, they echo ancient Babylon’s arrogance. The hand of judgment writes upon every balance sheet weighed in Heaven’s scales.

*_To Religious Authorities:_* Perhaps most sobering is the warning to those who handle sacred things carelessly. When ministers transform worship into entertainment, the gospel into prosperity formulas, or God’s house into personal kingdoms, they risk Belshazzar’s fate. *_Stop there: This does not call for your carnal judgment. That is God’s jurisdiction!_*

Sacred vessels were never meant for common use—how much more sacred callings?

*THE CHALLENGE: WHAT MUST WE DO?*

Beloved, Heaven’s standards demand our response. Consider these divine imperatives:

*1. Let us humble ourselves in Genuine Repentance*

*_“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”_* (2 Chronicles 7:14)

💕

Our *THEME:*

💕*_THE WRITING ON THE WALL: When Heaven Interrupts Human Pride_* 💕

God promises three-fold blessing to those meeting His fourfold conditions: ¹He will hear from Heaven, ²forgive our sins, and ³heal our land.

*2. Reverence What is Sacred and Holy*

*_“You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the Lord.”_* (Leviticus 19:30)

*_“Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.”_* (Ecclesiastes 5:1)

• *_“God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those around Him.”_* (Psalm 89:7)

• *_“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”_* (Hebrews 12:28)

*3. Honour God’s Ministers and Sacred Servants*

*_“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.”_* (1 Timothy 5:17)

*_“And we urge you, brethren, to recognise those who labour among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.”_* (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)

*_“Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”_* (Hebrews 13:7)

• *_“Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.”_* (Galatians 6:6)

*4. Accept Christ and Live with Eternal Perspective.*

We must become Christians, living with hope of eternal life, knowing we shall all face divine measurement. Every soul stands accountable before Heaven’s throne.

*5. Submit to Heart Examination*

• *_“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”_* (Psalm 139:23-24)

• *_“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirits.”_* (Proverbs 21:2)

• *_“I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”_* (Jeremiah 17:10)

*6. Live to Honour God in Every Aspect.*

• *_“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”_* (1 Corinthians 10:31)

• *_“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”_* (Colossians 3:17).

• *_“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”_* (Philippians 4:8).

• *_“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”_* (Romans 12:1).

Beloved, here comes the divine invitation. This morning, the hand of God writes not upon palace walls but upon human hearts. The message remains clear: humble yourself before it’s too late. Belshazzar ignored divine warnings until judgment fell—but you still have opportunity for grace.

Perhaps you have mocked the sacred, treated holy things with contempt, or lived as though God doesn’t exist, saying, *_“If God exists, he must have done his part. It is time for us to do our own and win by our own efforts!”_*.

Of course, God exists. Satan knows this and tremble. Who are mere humans?! He reigns in the affairs of the universe. You short-change yourself by shutting Him out of your soul!

The writing is on your heart’s wall: you’ve been weighed and found wanting. But unlike Belshazzar, your story need not end in judgment.

*Christ Jesus stands before you this day as your divine interpreter.* He alone can read Heaven’s writing upon your heart and offer forgiveness instead of condemnation. He owned the excellent spirit in Daniel. He was weighed upon Calvary’s cross and found perfect, dying for your imperfections. Through Him, your spiritual bankruptcy becomes Heaven’s riches, your guilt becomes His righteousness.

*_Will you humble yourself today? Will you acknowledge that earthly wisdom fails where divine grace succeeds? Christ offers what Babylon’s magicians could never provide—true interpretation of your soul’s condition and complete transformation through His blood._*

Don’t wait for tomorrow’s sunrise like Belshazzar did—it may never come. *Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour today.* Confess your sins, believe in His sacrifice, and receive eternal life. Let Heaven’s writing upon your heart declare not “MENE, TEKEL”—numbered and found wanting—but *_“FORGIVEN, REDEEMED, MADE NEW IN CHRIST!”_*

Come to Jesus now, whilst grace still calls your name. The hand of judgment can become the hand of blessing when you surrender to the Prince of Peace.
